Just read the report on the new P42, reckon it looks spendid, what are the panels thoughts?

Fantastic boat and one of the stars of SIBS but alas no lottery win for me.

I suppose that I will have to continue my daily toil and enjoying my old tub...

Maybe it is splendid but I cant help feeling that most new boats from the big 4 UK builders are really formulaic. I mean you can guess the layout of this boat without even looking at it - forward master cabin, 2 heads behind, side cabin with galley down opposite, saloon with U-shaped seating on one side and small settee/sideboard on the other? Am I wrong?They're all like that in this size range. Seeing an old Princess 388 the other day reminded me that nothing much has changed in 20yrs, not even the hull design, except the price of course

Yes but mike the next BMW/Merc saloon will have two seats up front, a bench behind, steering wheel on the rights, 4 wheels, etc. The basic layout has been optimised and is no longer what differentiates old from new or the big 4, especially in the 40-42 foot bracket. The differentiators are elsewhere: much finer cabinetry now than 5 years ago; more efficient engines and hull/prop/tunnel designs; styling; new electronic equipment. Lots and lots of details.

You say the hull design hasn't changed, but is that fair? There have been improvements in hull design partly help by use of computers. The old P40/P42 (a 1995-2000 boat approx, so a 1994 hull design I guess) does 0.9mpg @22 knots. The 2002-onwards Sq58 does 0.9mpg @ 22 knots. Some of that is improvement in engines and props. But some is cleverer design of hulls and tunnels I think.

By the way Clive, do you mean the p40? I didn't know there was a new P42?

Take a look at Nov MBM P42. Internally I agree the formula has been set however I did see a Sealine 42/45 with the galley on same level and opposite the dining area I think thats a plus

Clive - you mean the new P42 is on page P42?

The Sealine galley on port side opposite sofa is done to squeeze in a third cabin to starboard, I think. Perfickly ok if you want a third cabin, though on that size boat many would prefer more galley+saloon space and just 2 cabins - the boat is a bit small for 6 peeps anyway, imho. Still, it's good the market offers a choice

I ordered one at the Boat Show and I compared it to the Sealine F42/5 and Fairline Phantom 43. Apart from the gorgeous finish and build quality features worthy of note are - very spacious flybridge, wide-opening triple door, spacious cockpit and excellent visibility from helm. By the time I'd specified diesel heating, bowthruster, Furuno Radar/GPS, Autopilot, holding tank and other goodies the bill was the wrong side of 3 big ones, but suprisingly cheaper than the other two. I know for a fact that Princess sold 9 42's at the show and if you get a chance to look at one you'll understand why.

If we're making comparisons in cars, Ford have gone from the Escort Mk2 to the Focus in 20 yrs, the Focus being light years away in terms of performance, handling, quality, comfort, safety and just about reference point you care to name. In any case, a car is a utility product and its main function is to transport people; designers have a very limited volume in which to package the accomodation and are bound by numerous safety regulations so its not surprising that seating arrangements have'nt changed
On the other hand, boat designers have a much larger internal volume to work with and virtually no regulations to respect and yet they all come up with basically the same design in the 40-45' size range. IMHO, its boring
If there have been any advances, like, as you say, in engine efficiency and electronics, these have not been driven by the boat builders themselves. Prop tunnels have been around since the late 1980's and, basically, hull design has'nt changed since then ( I would'nt mind betting that the new P (Princess) 42 has the same hull mould as the old P40, albeit extended)
Regarding fuel consumption, I'll eat the next copy of MBY that drops through my door if the Squaddie 58 does 0.9mpg @ 22knots, especially with some cruising gear on board, more like 0.7mpg, IMHO! In any case, if there has been any significant improvement in fuel consumption, I think that'll be down to more efficient engines than any hull design changes

Yes, all points taken. I guess we're approaching it a different way- if I'm buying a boat then what differentiates the competing products (in my mind) is stuff other than seat layout - that's the analogy with a car. There too people choose one thing or another based on more subtle differences than layout

Dunno about Sq58 economy first hand. I remebered an old MBY report on a twin Cat800 boat and now on checking it the fig given was about 0.86mpg at 22 knots, perhaps based off manufacturers data. You are probably right, perhaps it is more like 0.8mpg clean bottom and 0.7mpg dirty. Still this shows some improving efficiency over older boats, probably mostly the engine manufacturer's work as you say. No doubt jumpingjackflash can give us first hand data :-)
