New Outboard Engine thoughts

Hi. I am looking for a new outboard for by GibSea 242 (lake sailing). I am trying to weigh up the pros and cons and thought the panel would have some views.

I want a 9.9 hp with lecci start and remote control.

I am aware that some manufacturers make engines that are re badged. I think Tohatsu make mariner etc. Does anyone have a list of rebadged engines so I will know what I am looking at.

Any comments on reliability, value, or what to watch out for etc would be most welcome.

we bought a tohatsu 2 stroke 9.9 with leccy start 2 years ago for use on the rib, leccy start as we didn't want the kids standing up pulling starting cords. To date its been the best outboard we've ever had.

Tohatsu are made by Nissan

not sure how you are storing the engine and tender, but you more or less wont be able to lift that engine on dry land, never mind on a boat...

Are Tohatsu made by Nissan? I have just bought one after a year of shopping and have been told by several sources that Tohatsu were the largest manufacturer in the world and make for several other brands. I got an excellent price on my 5hp at Excel

Check the length of the outboard casing carefully. I have just fitted a new Honda6 in my 242 and had to space/move the outboard plate on the boat back an inch, common problem I'm told!
