New Motor for SWMBO N.B.

Hi Steve, We went shopping for a new car for Swmbo 2 years ago. All she needs is a car for around town, And we don't have any kids just a dog. We also wanted something we could enjoy using at the weekends going to the boat.
We ended up buying a Year old BMW Z3.
People say its not practical, but why not? There is only 2 of us,like wise yourself(I think)?? And its great to head to the boat in a nice open top sports car.
Down side is the boot space, We can manage an overnight bag, 2cool boxes and the waterproofs but not much else. If we need to take other stuff like the dinghy or cleaning stuff, then we us my car a 4X4 and leave the stuff the week before.

As tcm says 'You only live once' Go out and enjoy yourselves/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif.

Re: Volvo flaming

jeez! Next thing people wil suggest he goes on the bus! Is this thread a windup? It's supposed to be populated by people with powerboats, innit?

And anyway, exactly what "toys" are on a volvo v70? - does it have a gps-equipped calculator to work out the local rate for a cup of tea, some brandy snaps and a packet of doilies? Does it have a tea-cosy dispenser? A purple rinse touch-up kit? No - merely a concrete front bumper to deflect the odd unnoticed pedestrain and motorbike, seats that give the impression that you are sitting on a road atlas, plus the standard VUP (Volvo Ugly Pack) .

The only decent-looking volvo (ever) is the P1800ES. There is also a one-off loony volvo around london - a 12-yearold white volvo estate with large hand-painted black blobs to make it look like a cow, and that's alright as well.

Unfortunately, since the ice age, there hasnt been an awful lot of sea around Leamington spa.
Boat too big to go up the Avon and rivers not really my cup of tea anyway.
Nearest sea marina is actually Penarth, closely followed by Ipswich, but Swansea is far nicer, which is why we decided on it despite the extra half hour of travel.
And we're happy there with lots of freinds.

Steve.

You're right it is ALFA It stands for Automobili Fabricada Lombardi Anonima.
"A car made by the Lombardi Family Ltd". Is the translation.
I also own an ALFA. A very fast 146. I have a permanent grin from driving it!!

Re: New Motor for SWMBO N.B. Update.

Hi all,

And thank you all for your advice and replies..very illuminating.
It does seem that the Audi seems to come out on top with a lot of you.

We've been out this evening looking around the dealerships again, couldnt find the Audi one. I thought it was the VW place in Leamington..but they only seem to do VW...so anyone know where the Audi dealership in South Warwickshire is?

We stopped off at the Mazda Showrooms, and quite liked the Premacy 2 litre diesel. 14 grand new but they had a couple of 04 low milers for 10999.
So that's under consideration. Bags of room but dunno much about mazda's.
We then went to the Rover place and they had a 75 diesel tourer in light blue metallic secondhand. an 02 car with 15000 on for £12000, right colour for SWMBO's Sky Blues mania and she really liked it..but a lot more mileage on than I would like.
So it's still ongoing.
We'll have a look down in Swansea at the weekend and also have another chat to our freind about the Focus.

I'll let you know when She's made up her mind..sometime next year perhaps...
Yawn.

Steve.

God I hope she never reads this forum....

Re: New Motor for SWMBO N.B. Update.

If you like the Audi but you dont like paying through the nose for the dubious snob value of owning a so-called prestige marque, then have a look at the new Skoda Octavia. Same platform, same build quality, same VAG parent company but loads of dosh less. The 1.9TDi diesel engine is plenty powerful enough especially in 130hp form

Re: New Motor for SWMBO N.B. Update.

All Mazdas have come out very well in road & reliability reports over the last couple of years as have Toyotas.
VW/Audi have not done so well in reliability reports such as the JD Power one - mind you, nor have Mercedes.
15k on an eighteen month to two year old car isn't high, especially for a diesel. Depreciation will still be higher for the Rover than any of your other choices however, unless you buy a Fiat or a Renault/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

If you want comfort, lots of toys etc have a look at the Peugeot 607 - cruise control, sat nav etc as standard on the SE and fuel consumption shows 35.3 for urban, 58.9 for extra urban and 47.1 for combined that is with the 2.0HDI - i am biased as that is my company car - like the cruise control as I cannot afford any more points on my licence since getting caught on the M4 in Wales a couple of months back.

Re: New Motor for SWMBO N.B. Update.

Not quite, made from the similar bits, Passat is a stretched previous-generation A4 with softer suspension. Latest A4 is firmer setup. VW=Audi=Seat=Skoda not! Bit like saying the Jag X-Type is a Mondeo (apart from the top end of the engine, the suspension, the exterior, the interior, the electrics....)
