This e-mail sent out to all at spouses place of work. "Please take note... If you receive a text message on your mobile from the number 15477 Indicating that you have won a 2 night stay in the Druid's Marriott in Wicklow, saying that they you must reply with the text "#90" or "#09", You Should delete this text immediately and not reply. This is a fraud Company using a device, that once you press #90 or #09 and reply text, they can access your "SIM" card and make calls at your expense." Might be an idea to forward this message.

Re: E Mail Hoax

Fair comment, As e-mail had been refered from HWMBO's head office we naturaly assumed it to be accurate, Cheers, Mike.

Apparrently there is a similar scam on land lines as well. People are being phoned and when they answer they are told that it is an engineer testing the line. They are asked to complete the test by pressing #90 and hanging up. This gives the caller complete access to the phone and allows them to make calls which are charged to the target phone account.
I saw this on a neighbourhood watch leaflet, which also said that police believed that the calls were coming from prisons.

Re:Also a hoax..

This is a hoax, though not completely

It can work on some US PBX switchboards (the switchboards used by companies)

It certainly does not apply to residential phones, either here or in the US.

All untrue, any police officer (and I very much doubt whether it could be attributed to one) who has made such a statement has no knowledge of prison phone systems.

As you are on the Isle-of-Wight, do we presume an inhabitant of Parkhurst?
