Skimmed it last night.

1. Depsol, what's going on? Some bloke from Manchester has written in on the letters page saying he bort some dodgy diesel and Soltron cured all his problems. And he's got same surname as me, yikes!

2. Some pics of forumites' boats at festival of power. Could make out Diana2, just, in one pic. Any others posters in these pics?

3. At the festival of power, why was the prize for longest rip to get there given to a Dublin boat? Commendable though that journey was, and reespect to the sailors who did it, surely Antibes is further?

4. I think MBY should bite the bullet and get the hardtop upgrade for the MBY sportfisher 37. Any chance, has next year's capex been finalised yet Tom?

I wondered about the Soltron letter and it's amazing cure for dodgy diesel. Is it that good?
Should I be using diesel additives in my boat (a one year old Phantom 40).

1. We assumed it was Depsol bigging-up Soltron, but ran it anyway

2. Dunno

3. Prize awarded for trip specifically to attend FoP, not for some bloke looking to scrub off expensive anti-foul in Biscay and annoy berth-holders at Port Solent who just happened to turn up at FoP

4. Looking to upgrade to hard-top in the spring (capex and RF1 permitting)

Re: festival of drink

hm, yes, antibes is loads further but they were strict about the trip being specifically to attend the rally. Also seems they were a bit strict about all the other comps, so a sealine crew won the sealine competion and a boat that wasn't a sunseeker or fairline or big won all the other things, not that i'm all bitter about it, you understand. Fairline won the unofficial "most inept PR" prize by giving goodie-bags to everyone one the rally...PROVIDED that that they were in a fairline, duh!

Actually, not tru bout prizes, poster "mjf" won the "sitting about for two hours and then dipping the ensign" prize. Well, actually, his swmbo did, and not him.

1) Hmm; does sound dodgy. But if it's somebody trying to troll, it's going to take an awfully long time to build up a thread in a monthly magazine. Do you have an evil twin?

2) All right, I give up. Which pic. is D2 in? Presume the picture in the centre of page 44 is the Mobo-ettes (PaulineB, PowerSkipper and hlb)?

3) tcm's explanation sounds plausible, albeit a bit sour grapey. My theory is that Messrs Isitt and Co. realised that the result would be a shoo-in and cobbled together some rubbish about IPC employees and contributors not being eligible for prizes.

4) Agreed. Like pix of Jordan, irrefutable proof that topless is not always best /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

I'm just grumpy, 'cos I couldn't go (but was in Brittany at the time, disposing of the EU Moules Mountain, so mustn't grumble too much).

Tom I do hope you are joking. Not the sort of thing I would do thank you, coming on here is one thing but pseudonames on a letter to a mag is another. Apart from the occasional mention of Soltron Atlantic Challenge and you once maybe twice showing the updated pctures of Spirit rather than when i was first photographed I dont think Soltron has ever been mentioned in your publication.

I subscribed to MBY whilst at SIBS so that I would get the mag before it came out in the shops but I havent had it yet and its out in the shops. Is there a delay on new subscriptions?

Re: hear hear!

yes, i agree, the very idea that the dearest depsol wd do something so fiendish as to pretend he was from Manchester! And as for plugging soltron, he's been very quiet, apaprt from the 4 zillion soltron posts and er, well, anyway... :)

I only visited for the Black Tie Dinner, very good it was too. Even more interestingly if memory serves, "Lady Hamilton" (of the alleged chop in front of everyone and abuse fame) was there too!! P

Haven't got the mag in front of me jhr. D2 was in the background of one pic, view of her stbd side though heavily obscured by other boats in pic. The silver stripe along the gunwhale was very visible

The soltron letter in MBY

Hope I'm not putting out what could become a good flaming but I know for sure the letter in MBY about Soltron is 100% genuine. It was written by my brother and his missus, who did indeed get their boat very fixed by Soltron after buying some duff fuel from a road tanker in Glandore, SW Ireland. He is long distance boater (300hours+ per year) and now a total solly convert and you'll notice in the letter he uses fluent sollyspeak like "double dose her" and "magic". He now uses these terms in ordinary conversation. In fact, if he weren't my brother he'd have been off the christmas card list some time ago....

About 3 weeks after this solly fix there was a bearing failure in his port engine and it needed complete re-build, only recently completed. My brother is not an engineer and probably it did not occur to him when penning that letter to make any cause and effect link with Soltron. But it's an uncanny fact that the engine bearings had been fine for 9000hours before the Soltron was used......

Good news boat the hardtop Tom (RF1....?). I'll offer you £50 for the bimini :)

Re: The soltron letter in MBY

I think Tom's letter was just "banter" with Depsol and it seems to have been taken too literaly.

Re: The soltron letter in MBY

As MedDreamer correctly surmised, it was a bit of light-hearted badinage, but glad your bro got his problems solved. And I'm not even going to go there with the engine bearings thing...

RF1...it's something Soft Furnishings (aka Publishers and assorted bean-counters downstairs) are always blithering on about. Something to do with revenue forecasts, off-line transactional revenue streams, blergle flargle schmurgle blurp...I dunno what they're on about most of the time.

Was going to put the bimini on eBay, along with all the free nav gear we blagged for it. In fact, might put the entire contents of our store room on eBay...all manner of useless crap in there that we should be able to flog to PBO readers.

Re: festival of drink

Agree with you ref the Fairline PR - they hosted a great evening then did a wonderful self kill on the PR front.

Mrs MJF did enact a super 'dip' as our 'prize' photo shows - this after hours of practice (and education from the skipper) - and she nearly fell off the swim platform in our Bermuda Rig of the Day as we passed the RYS. Overcome with emotion....

I have only leafed thou my copy but I will enjoy the Bermuda bit as I boated there for 15 yrs.

Re: The soltron letter in MBY

Somehow don't think that MBY's readers really want 8 assorted VHF aerials, an elephant beanie-baby, an injector nozzle from a 28 litre CRN diesel, a gold-plated MAN rocker cover, several lifejackets that date back to the 1970s, last year's Kylie Minogue calendar and a Supra S100 variable-pitch propeller (to name but a few bits of tat we seem unwilling to throw away). But you never know...
