New marina at Walton on the naze

with regard to Burnham Yacht Harbour, I wasn't here at the time but old time residents tell me that there was a proposal to put the marina further downstream, closer to the town centre but some locals objected and wanted the yachties kept away as far as possible. which is odd for a town with so much sailing history, but marinas are probably a bit new fangled as an idea.

that's a shame because closer to the town centre would have helped local pubs, restaurants and shops.

as to Brightlingsea, it looks to me like a half a**ed idea from the drawing board of an architect and developer who didn't really know what they were doing. the 'marina' has no facilities whatsoever and is obviously just a boat park for the posh people they were hoping would buy the flats. it might have worked - as it has done - in exmouth but not on the colne. anyway it's silted up according to YM.

i love brightlingsea but agree somewhat with some of the above comments - it was never likely to attract posh people with mobos.

Yes, indeed it might have worked had the developers taken the time to listen to the suggestions made, but oh no, nowhere near enough money in it for them, so (alledgedly) a few palms were greased and Cell Block H was built! C'est la vie!

THANK GOD THAT MUCH!!! :) :) :)

I always thought an oxymron was an internal contradiction - phrases like 'military intelligence' spring to mind.

Point I was trying to make is that waterside developments do tend to have an upmarket profile and the 'marina' as it is designed looks like a boat park for Princesses and Sunseekers. If I had the kind of money they were asking for the flats to start with, then I'm not sure I would have seen Brightlingsea as the right kind of aspirational location to attract me.

Agree money doesn't equal poshness. The 'Romford Navy' consists of large expensive motorboats owned by people with lots of cash but no pretensions to gentility.

I think we are in general agreement, but I felt that putting "posh" and "motor-boat" together did indeed contain the seeds of a contradiction.

We have a friend who lives contentedly in the Brightlingsea Travelodge as we call it and has a sailing-boat in the marina. I've only been inside once and it seemed quite comfortable, if not my cup of tea. I wouldn't like to have a share of responsibility for the pilings in my contract however.

Understand this planning permission was requested before Tesco got the go ahead so anyone know the latest?

Must agree that Walton desperately needs a stimulus but a second marina in an area that would require continuous heavy dredging?

Possibly The Mere should be returned to being just a boating lake but that would be an expensive project so where is that money going to come from?

I hope I can pick the brains of a Maldon 'guru' here - it's clear on Google Earth that there's a large old gravel pit(?) just south of the Heybridge canal, but do you know if there has ever been any rumblings about turning this patch of water into some sort of marina? (Or is that the mere?)

I would guess that it would be very difficult to overcome the nature conservation lobby in that area.

The proposed development at Walton is possibly going to have a challenge along these lines even though it used to be a boating lake.

I believe that an application by Fox's to develop a marina opposite the old Power Station came unstuck because of conservation issues. Difficult to see why when you look at it.

An existing boaty waterfront like the Wet Dock at Ipswich might be the last new marina we will see . There still seems a chance of a new marina Dovercourt way due to Felixstowe Docks developing Bathside Bay. The docks have land banks where they can offer alternative wild areas as offsets.
