New LED TVs, are they really that energy efficient?

I had the idea to replace my pc monitor with an led tv/monitor that also plays movies through a usb stick.... But not if it uses more power than my existing monitor.

22 inch specs say about 40 watts which sounds a bit high. I would have expected by now alot less.
So the other day I put the meter in an old fat tv which was also about the same size.....
60 watts... I was a bit surprised. If an old fat tv uses only 60 watts then surely the new led tvs should use much less.

umm, there are all kinds of flatscreen displays

and most recently
Field emission displays (FEDs) also known as Nano-emissive displays (NEDs of course !)


Power consumption varies as a function of the size and the type, but they are getting lower as the various systems develop. There are some issues, though, with recycle ability, and the amount of rare earths used in flat screen technology.

Don't forget that virtually all "LED" tv's on sale, are in fact just an LCD tv that used LED's as the back light rather than ccfl tubes.

If you really want an LED tv propper, wait for OLED or similar technologies to mature and become available.

OLED tvs are a bit out of my price range as they seem to have costs into the thousands... i was thinking up to 300 euros

I have a 24 inch widescreen LCD monitor which is powered by a 12 volt 36 watt adapter, so 40 watts for a 22 inch screen with a tuner sounds fairly reasonable, but you can probably find a slightly more efficient one.

Trouble is the digital tuners are quite power hungry, there is little you can do about it.

So.... what did i end up buying

So I ended up buying a 22 inch LG tv/monitor tuner, hdmi, tft, usb for movies, vesa mount.
M2280DF
It runs on 30 watts but has various energy saving modes down to 20 watts.

As you can watch HD movies through the usb, there is nearly no need for a dvd player spinning around using some more amps.

pc also plugs in nicely

... and if you have bought a TV with a USB port, but no built in DVD player then Novatech even have a solution for playing DVDs on it.

A USB connected DVD player that is powered from the USB and is also TV connectable. Useful for the on board netbook!

This company - http://ccgi.sttech.force9.co.uk/?page=products&range=picoPC had some nice stuff at the boat show, think the monitor was drawing 1.5a and the small pc 1a. They said website was slowly getting updated. Monitor ran off 12v and was £175.00
