New KVH M2 \'at anchor\' Sat TV System?

I never really saw the point in having a sat system capable of tuning in to Eastenders at 25kts in the middle of the ocean but this new M2 system seems to offer what I want ie. the ability to watch Sat TV whilst stationary at anchor or in the marina but not the capability to track satellites at speed. It also seems to have the performance of a larger unit
Anyone got any experience or views on this kit?

I dont get it Deleted User. It must motor the dish aroud constantly at anchor using gyros and stepper motors and stuff, so why not underway? Seems very strange.

I think Nick_H might have this M2 job - he certianly has a 37cm KVH, and it works well. I have the 37cm Raymarine (I didn't want a big one, they look so ugly) and it works fine. However the 37cm jobs only pick up one of the beams on the Astra south satellite so I don't get all the free channels that a bigger dish would give me. Which doesn't bother me in the slightest. From rough memory i get ITV various channels, Ch4 and 5, CNN, the kiddy stuff like CBBC, and some other random junk. Not BBC1 though

Dont ask me anthing more technical though, I dont want to understnad satellite TV!

The M2 is just like the M3 but not quite as agile. It will keep track of the signal when motoring and turning slowly but hasn't got quite the sophistication to allow it to track at high speeds. This means it can be cheaper than the M3 but still self tracking when swinging on an anchor or mooring up at different locations.

I have the Raymarine 45cm. Whilst we have never watched TV under way, we were able to record the whole of the Bahrain GP whilst under way at 20 kts and watch it on arrival. Having said that we did really only buy it for simplicity of operation and ability to use it at anchor or on a swinging mooring.

Re: New KVH M2 \'at anchor\' Sat TV System?

Apparently, the M2 is the M3 with less gyro stabilizing capability but it's all in vain anyway because I've just been told that Majorca is at the outer edge of the UK Astra footprint and there is interference from an Arab satellite footprint to the south. This means that neither the M2 nor the M3 will get any English language channels and I would need to go to the M5 to get even a few channels and then not even Beeb or ITV. Apparently I need 1.5m dish to get everything which is going to look a bit awkward nailed to my radar arch. Ho hum, shame

Academic now then, as you say, but out of interest I agree with you there's no real need for a system that works as you cruise, on a planing mobo. I have the M3, but only cos the M2 wasn't available at the time. It might be different in a stabilised displacement boat, whilst some crew could watch TV during the passage.
