Anyone know if the New inn is closed for any reason. Have been trying to call them for 2 days to book a table but nobody answers. i have submitted the online booking form but no response to that either.

I hope they're open again soon. They do the best mushroom soup ever. Looks a little like caviar in brown sauce, but it's magnificent...

...BUT...make very sure when you order it, that they have it in the kitchen.

I ordered it last month, and was served what was alleged to be vegetable soup, instead. It was the meanest, saddest, thinnest lukewarm muck I ever tasted. It didn't taste at all. I think the chef must have panicked when he realised he had no mushroom soup, and hurriedly blended a couple of florets of broccoli and half a carrot. I don't think he had even added an onion. Very disappointing.

I'll go back and order the mushroom soup again, but I'll make sure they have it before I pay for it.

The gossip is that it's a situation similar to the Pier View closure in Cowes; the tenant got fed up with the owner's demands. The Pier View is yet to re-open.

Calculating tide times for shalfleet (ie when to we have to get to the pub, when do we have to leave, and when do we have to leave if we run) is a core part of the Newtown experience. I normally eschew anywhere which might be described as a “gastro pub” but the new inn seemed to consistently deliver good food and beer. Having said that, I see the incumbent publicans and have been there less than 2 years and it may be 2 years since I was last there.

In the old days I wouldn't have needed decent food to entice me into a pub, but now it's the only reason I go in one.

The New Inn always felt like an assured good lunch and the location is idyllically rustic however you arrive.

I hope it re-opens with fine food as its main selling point.
