As I understand all the companies (BW, EA etc) are planning to combine and issue a single licence which covers all waterways.

It seems that there will be a flat rate for of app £190 for a 5m boat with an extra £80 per meter over that, and narrow boats will get a 30% discount.

So my 10m wide beam boat licence will increase from £375 to £590. and I will have to pay for waterways I cannot use.

This information may be wrong, or I may have misunderstood but as this came from a club officer and freind that I trust I have listed this here to see if anyone else has info on this.
 
Suggest you ask your friend for more info and to identify the source.

Sounds highly unlikely to me.

And why on earth would narrow boats get a 30% discount? Any sane charging system would charge them more 'cos they take up so much mooring space !

I know the weather is a bit like early April but it's actually May now........

Chinese Whispers.
EA - as part of its new powers - plan to harmonise their licenses, but I don't recall it would be a single licence, merely a "harmonised" method of licensing with a common department dealing with it all.

It could take some time.

Boats licensed in different EA areas get a 15 day permission to use another area.

In similar vein there is a joint EA and BW Gold License allowing unlimited use of the other's water. It's a good deal for BW folk but absolute rubbish the other way around.

Not an awful lot of people use it anyway.

In any event your figures are too cheap - a Gold license for a decent length NB is nearly £1,000...
 
The source as I understand was the ANRC. (but nothing on there website)

Whilst I do understand the chinese whispers syndrome, some years ago the same source told me I would have to MOT my boat, I thought that was chinese whispers but two years later. BSS?

I will check on this within the next few weeks and I will post any info I can find out.

Absolutely,

But don't forget BW own some broad canals - where some intrepid proper boats occasionally venture.
Not to forget their rivers - Lea, Severn / Gloucester and Sharpness canal and others.
Now, there are some really big proper boats on there. :D

Yes .....but you forget that unless it directly connects to the Thames,preferably somewhere that the flag on Windsor Castle remains comfortingly visible for the entire adventure up what basically may as well be the Limpopo as far as Thames boaters are concerned,none of this bunch will be going there.

It might help if they could hire a lock keeper for a week to go with them for reassurance.

good friend forumite "ThamesBoater" is on Gloucester & Sharpness canal with his Princess 415 as we speak ......so I think that disproves your theory.

Grand Union Canal
Paddington Arm
Upper and Lower Medway
Chelmer and Blackwater
The Canal Club my parents were members of before they moved to the Thames, is flying in Belgium and French clubhouses put there by them. (I went with them as a teenager)

Havent done Limpopo yet although have crossed the River Plate from Argentina to Ureguay so anything is possible?

Yeah, well I lost count of how many times I did the Suez (including by camel to Cairo while my mate and a pilot looked after the boat (well, ship really I spose!) and I did the Panama at least once - not to mention a 15,000 ton tanker a hundred miles or so up the Congo River.

However, to get back to reality - what percentage of Thames registered boats ever get on to a canal ? The cross waterways traffic is pretty much one sided as TrueBlue stated in a rare moment of lucidity :D

I like the canals too, used to keep a boat on the K&A and have done loads of the network in hireboats back in the days of being single. Indeed Father in law wants us to crew for himself and wheelchair mobile mother in law on t' Leeds and Liverpool next year and I quite look forward to it. I do agree however that the Gold ticket is not much use to Thames based cruisers, but thet 15 days elsewhere works nicely for a trip to the Medway
