About 11 years ago I bought a complete kit to marinise a Ford 1.6 Diesel engine which I fitted to the engine at that time. However due to work and other commitments I was not able to launch the boat until last week.

I have just got the engine running but find that when I engage fwd or rev there is a pretty bad rattle from the gearbox drive train. When I increase the RPM the rattle diminishes.

The gearbox was a Hurth HBW 100 1.5:1 serial no 11-56241 and was new at the time of purchase. I bought an R&D damper drive plate with the gearbox as part of the kit.

Can anyone suggest anything I may have done wrong with the marinising or is it just these units rattle at tickover?

Regards

Hi John
It might be the drive plate thats not helping.
Speak to Roger at R&D Marine (tel:01462 892391) and explain the situation. Certain gearboxes require a specific drive plate options.

Hi John,

I wrote a nice long reply about my Hurth and then I lost connection whilst posting it (I'm at anchor). Hey ho.

The upshot of it was that I have had two Hurth 250s and both rattle in tickover. This is normal. If the noise changes and sounds 'more rattly' then your plates could be on their way out, but you'll know this when it stops engaging in either gear. Otherwise your Hurth sounds normal.

Just a thought andpossibly not connected but my Volvo (mainly thought to be engine and not gearbox) was very rattly - turned out an engine mount had gone. Maybe worth a check ?.
