I have just been contacted by a guy who has started up a website called

www.grib.us

The website is lacking in instructions but I can help you, if required.

This is a grib file server that can be asked to send a GRIB file to anyone FREE for anywhere in the world.

For website use, you need to register by sending an email to him. You can also download a free program that at present can graphically request GRIB files direct from the server. It will be able to view GRIB files but not at present. But you can use the free software from SailMail to view the file, once downloaded.

If you need help in figuring all this out, feel free to reply here or email me.

A direct link to the software and info is on my UK Weather Portal.

This GRIB file service is the best available for free as you get the most up to date GFS runs, and you get 1/2 degree resolution at 3hr intervals out to 7 days ahead.

Good cruising

Fine ... but surely not only free service out there ...

I get mine from :

Global Marine Net .....

its actually gribot"at"globalmarinenet.net that sends it to me ... based on a short text file detailing lat / long and time frames etc.

Good luck with it ...

Re: New GRIB file service ..... what is it ... simple terms

I use it for weather trends over an area ... like a weather forecast .... it is particularly good for wind speed and dir'n.

Various PC based Chart programs can overlay a Grib file on your chart display giving you a) navigation via the chart program, b) weather ......... all in one view.

Re: New GRIB file service - it\'s for getting the weather

It's certainly not the only free one but it IS the only free one which gives 1/2 degree resolution to 7 days ahead !! and you get the latest info from the GFS runs so it's not just a once a day email. You can get the 00hr and 12hr forecast predictions.

A GRIB file is a small data file that contains weather information, in this case wind speed and pressure for the next 7 days. It is usually around 30Kb in size depending on the Lat and Long resolution. The Global Forecast System is the most accurate out there and for long range forecasts, and I feel it is the best way to monitor weather systems.

Raymarine and Globalmarine give 1 degree resolution at 6hr intervals for 3 days.

Re: New GRIB file service - it\'s for getting the weather

A slight correction - Raymarine Gribs are for 3 days but include data for wind, pressure, temperature and precipitation. The Global Marine Gribs show wind for 7 days. Saildocs are another source of free Grib files showing wind and pressure for 7 or more days.

I have written a Grib viewer which can be downloaded from
www.ballgate.com/gribviewer
It includes functions to download Gribs from the sources shown above.
