The surveyor turned his nose up at our Flavel 700C non gimballed cooker, because it did not have therm-couples (spelling?). So its a new cooker for us. Any thoughts as to what to buy? All suggestions welcome, but please don't hijack the thread with the dangers of LPG.

The Flavel B700C was more of a Camper Van cooker. (No gimbal.)
The decision as to which one to get may well depend upon how much space available.
Is there enough room to fit a gimballed cooker?

Expect you will be constrained in your choice by the available space. The Nelson and Neptune are the popular replacements and will probably fit in widthwise, but are likely to be taller.

Been very happy with our Spinflow Nelson over the last three years.

My regular crewmate enjoys cooking, so it gets used for rather more than the typical bacon butties and stew. The oven has been used for roasts, baking bread, home-made pizza, and various cakes. The grill does good toast, and the burners work as well as any others, with good pan clamps, and can be easily dismantled for cleaning just like your home ones (some other makes need tools for this, so it never gets done). In the two magazine reviews I've seen, it came out top of the "normal" cookers, beaten only by very high-end units costing thousands.

There is one small downside in that mounting a conventional bolt to lock the gimbals is not easy due to the glass front. In practice I haven't found this a problem, even unlocked it doesn't swing much when in harbour. You could probably arrange something if needed, it just might take a little lateral thinking.

It would also be nice to have a piezo ignition button, but a long-nosed lighter does the job for us.

Did similar research recently and at the budget end- just a mere £200(ish!) the Thetford Spinflo or Tasman have flame failure devices on the two burners and the grill BUT at this level none could I find with pan clamps and rails which are necessary- these cost an eye-watering £60+ so if your Flavel has the rails/clamps for heavens sake save them as you should be able to switch over with a bit of tinkering

We've also just fitted a Spinflo Nelson. Haven't used it much yet, but it was an easy replacement for a Flavel Vanessa, being much the same size. The different gimbal arrangement necessitated a slightly higher mounting, perhaps two centimetres.

+1 We removed our Taylors 30 paraffin oven and replaced it with the Nelson Spinflo over three years ago and use it often as I stay aboard for 10 days at a time, good bit of kit and due to the size of the gas locker use 907 Campingaz bottle which surprisingly lasts ages and is very hot and never had a poor meal yet!.
