A while back I mentioned about the Garmin GPS phone that was being launched in the UK. It seems to be available now at this link :-

I think you can send a message to someone else's phone requesting their position which if the agree is displayed on your screen. Could be quite useful for meeting up with each other at Sea /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

I saw it in the brochure, but it was not available, it's the first time I have seen it for sale. What puts me off is that it is only Dual band, no good for some of the areas I have to travel to.

Oh dear what a waste of time. The position request will only work if the number you are calling has the same phone. What possible use could this be to the average person. VIP's Diplomats granted, but the chap in the street, no.

There will always be people to jump onto the latest gizmo that comes along. Be it mobile phones, Pda's or the latest micro digital cam. A marketing mans dream, poor souls.

Isn't it just as easy to call on the VHF and tell them where you are? or even phone them and tell them? Bloody gadgets! Where will it all end? in tears no doubt!

I never watch that programme, I would much rather be out on my boat with some gadgets /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Don't be silly Scotty /forums/images/icons/wink.gif it would be far too easy to do that. Much better to spend nearly 500 squids and contact the other party and find out they cannot send you their position as they don't have a phone that reciprocates.

That and the fact that you will probably find he's got a dsc radio and isn't listening on C16 'cos he's fed up with radio checks...so, as you don't have his mmsi number, .............../forums/images/icons/smile.gif

BUT how accurate are those alarms anyway. I set one for 25mtrs and it kept going off, I increased it to 100 mtrs and it still kept going off, now either I was moving or the satellites were /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif I was still roughly in the same spot as my anchor was down and I was in the same position in relation to ther boats, so either we were all in 'drag', swingers. or the 'drag alarm' is not for that kind of drag /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif I could see a nice looking 'lady' on one of the other boats (not that I am in the habit of looking at such things) so perhaps it was right /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif
