Groan, groan. Well, it's happened and I'm going to have to get a new engine. I'd be most grateful for any input re reliability, prices, problems etc concerning the following 25-30hp engines. And if you have suggestions, feel free!
Volvo D1-30
Yanmar 3YM30
Lombardini LDW 1003M
Nanni 3.100 HE
Vetus M309
Beta HD1005

please note that these are not in any preference of order... My boat is a 32-footer 3,500 tonner, with propellor shaft.

Yanmar engines have a very good reputation for reliability and long life. The Volvo is a relatively new replacement for the older 29hp three cylinder engine, so is relatively untried as regards reliability & longevity. I know both the above will be easy to get serviced, or obtain spares as both will be common, the other makes may not be so easy in some places. I suggest you get detailed quotes for fitting as well as basic cost, and at the same time get a list of approved service centres for each engine, in every country you intend to sail to. One other point to consider is whether any of them are a direct replacement in terms of mounting points and shaft alignment, for your old engine, as this may cut the costs considerably. (I assume you intend to buy your engine complete with gearbox, and not try to mate a new engine to the old box).

I have a Nanni 3.75 in a Rival 32; works well, no problems. One issue you must consider is the available space / size of the engine - means of access behind the new engine (to get at stuffing box etc) once installed is a key factor, often overlooked.
 
Re: New engine... First measure up ....

and compare old specs in terms of mount spacing, height, offset to shaft etc. to new .....

The difference in cost if you can unbolt old and bolt in new would be huge !! Or at least get away with minimum changes.

That would weigh heavily in choice of which engine ........... then start thinking about sales and service in the area that you are going to be based .....

Which one ? They all work !! They all have reasonable reputations .....
 
Sorry I'm not an expert, but why the 3YM30 instead of the 2GM20? The latter gives a decent amount of oomph in my 4,500kg 32-footer, even with 2-bladed prop. Or have they stopped producing the 2GM20?
 
Steve, with the greatest respect, is it any co-incidence that I seem to remember that you are a sort of agent for Beta engines and the way that you always post strongly in favour of them?

In the interests of balance, Nanni engines are also based on exactly the same Kubota engines as Beta.

Pay your money and take your choice. I actually wonder whether there are any really bad modern diesels.

i have the Nanni 4150 ( Kubota based as the Beta is )
i was advised that Nanni are the only mariniser recognised by Kubota who supply them direct to Nanni ( France ), also that the Nanni is a better marinised product, allegedly.

the price i paid over the Beta amounted to approx £1100 /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif 3 1/2 yrs ago, was it worth the extra ? cant comment. had no problems except a badly made wiring loom manufactured by the UK importer ( if you have a UK supplied Nanni check the crimped-on connectors) /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif.
the Nanni 2 yr warranty i had wasn't worth the paper it was written on /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif, only the base engine covered & this severely limited. engine had to be serviced by the agent even though i fitted it myself i was considered not fit to change the oil!.

the engine now on 450 hrs ( 4 seasons ) sweet as a nut

the Beta had a 3 yr un-conditional warranty & owner serviceable /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well I havent changed a single spark plug on my 3YM30 yet. Havent even had them out to check the plug gaps. Marvellous.


210 hours so far at approx 3000rpm has given 3 litres per hour consumption figures. Negligible oil consumption. No coolant losses, but do use the right grade in the first place or the heat exchanger will foul. Jeanneau take note.
The (any) 3 cylinder engine has a much better harmonic balance than a twin and is thus very very smooth. This one is also quiet.
Specify the larger 80a alternator if you go for the Yanmar.
Dont forget to add the cost of a speedseal kit! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Work out the access you need to service the damned thing, not just get it into the boat. Dont forget to add the cost and space of a decent sound lagging and a fire extinguishing system.
Consider also the need for a forced air sealed compartment that sucks the engine and cooling air in, and has a thermocoupled fan and duct system to take the hot air away again. Works well on my bateau.

All these engines could do with having a proper size suction device to get the oil changes done and not have to go through the dipstick.

Suggest you make up a portable engine box to take to the showroom and plonk over the potential engine to check knuckle skinning potential. Tee Hee.

Seems to be a large variance in pricing, so look around at dealers getting shot of an engine they need to move for this months sales figures.
 
On our Nanni we had a solenoid fail - replaced under warranty whilst we were in France by the local Nanni dealer after discussions with the UK importer and no problem. Don't remember anything about limited warranty when we bought.

Regarding price, I negotiated at the boat show and got the same price within a few pounds or so as the equivalent Beta. It might even have been cheaper - it was so close as to not be a concern.

I have nothing against the Beta and the only reason we chose the Nanni at the time was that we preferred the engine control panel.

I also have no connection with Nanni except as a happy one time Nanni customer.
