Have just bought a 2nd hand Sigma33 knowing that the engine (a Volvo Penta 2003) needed replacement sooner or later. I have had one company recommended to me where for PX, fitting and labour the cost will come somewhere between 5K and 6.5K. So a) is this reasonable and b) does anybody know of a reputable marine engineering company in the Solent Area. Thanks in advance
 
Although I am not a lover of Volvo a "like for like" swap is the easiest way to go. As they mention PX I would question what exactly you are getting for your money. To me the term PX would imply they would supply a recon unit or "short engine".
Does the price include a new gearbox, wiring loom, starter, alternator, engine mounts and control cables / lever?.

I would also look at Bukh, Yanmar, Beta and Nanni and compare not only price but also what is included in the package and maintenance / repair costs.

Beta, I believe can supply various mounting legs or frames to suit your original mounting positions making a convertion almost "like for like" although I don't know if they do a set for Volvo 2003 replacement it would be worth asking the question.

When we bought Yanita she came with a Volvo Penta 2003 (28hp). We had the engine replaced with a Yanmar 3JH4 (38hp).
PX, labour, new saildrive we paid just over 5K in Nieuwpoort (Belgium). This was 2.3K below the best UK quote we got (Davis Marine - Ramsgate).

Thanks for your responses. OK, If I were to go for a new Volvo the equivalent would be a D130. Personally I really don't give a damn what engine is in there providing that it is equal in spec (and HP etc) of the previous one - so I'm not hung up on 'names' The cost so I'm told includes taking out the old engine and gearbox, labour and inserting the new engine and gearbox. I presume the wiring loom, starter, alternator, engine mounts and control cables / lever will be part of that, but as ever I will have to check that the thieving bandits will actually provide that :-)

Additionally as I intend to race this wee beastie, I am naturally concerned about keeping with the Class Association Rules and indeed any IRC rules. Can anybody shed any light here on this ?

Beta Marine can make special feet to match both their engine and your existing engine support structure. A good contact is Steve Booth on 07767 204 498.

[/ QUOTE ] Last year this man charged me £5 for 12" of 3/16" gland packing. Couldn`t find another source at short notice so had to grin (rictus?) and bear it. Won`t be going there again if I can help it!
 
My previous boat was a Sigma 33, and the engine had been replaced with a Beta, the 3 cylinder model. It was very easy to get to and service, and never gave a days worry, and the chap I sold it to has not had any problems either. Add to that the excellent after sales advice and service....Adrian at Beta was always happy to ring back and talk one through a simple job, essential for a hopeless mechanic like myself. They could advise you on your local agent.

My tame engineer tells me that my Volvo MD2030 is a superb engine bought by Volvo from Perkins. He aslo said the injector system was self-priming, thus making filter changes a doddle. I have been very happy with it. any views on that?

We re-engined our Sigma 33 with a Nanni - actually its the same engine as the Beta so pay your money and take your choice. We had to get a new prop as well as the folding prop with the old Volvo was the wrong 'hand'. The engine was magnificant and we were very very happy with it. It also came as standard with a nicer control panel than the Beta.

We also noticed that our waterline rose to something close to the other Sigma 33's which we raced against. No stones to throw, but I wonder just how many Sigma 33's have put lead weights in to match the weight of the original engine!!

We have a Volvo 2040 in our current boat and it is very very heavy. The 2030 is the same block. If you want to race your Sigma, check the weights of the engines before you buy.
 
Nanni and Beta are the same engine, but the nanni is lighter, because Beta add a plate in to act as a sort of balancing flywheel, and this reduces the vibration. pays your money and takes your choice.

No its not, the 2040 was a completely different block from the 2030....

Your right in as much as the 2040 was no light weight, weighing in at 199kgs inc gearbox. Compared to the 2030 at 140kgs inc gearbox.

Still seeing as these engines have now been superseded by the massively overhauled D1 & D2 13hp-40hp range, its not all that relevant anymore.

Incidentally the D2-40 (replacement to the 2040) is a 4 cylinder unit weighing in at 177kgs inc gearbox.
