The aging engine, a 36hp BMC, in our boat is coming to the end of it's useful life and so I am looking around for a replacement.
Does any one know of any comparative studies/reviews available on the web, that might point me in the direction of suitable replacement? Opinion and experiences of replacing engines would also be welcomed.

Thanks,
David Wood

Can't help with suggestions for that engine, but having re-engined my boat, one of the most important things is to find a new one that will fit the space with the least possible adjustment of things like engine bearers, propshaft length, exhaust, fuel, cooling water and cable runs, etc.

Make sure you take details of all the 'hard points' of the existing installation and compare them with yor shortlist of engines, or you might find you've got to add several £'00s to fit the new one in.

Most of the modern engines are good, look at NANNI & BETA(both marinised Kubota industrial engines - well thought of); Volvo Penta, marinised Perkins but built in Japan; VETUS - marinised Mitsubishi and of course YANMAR; and I'm sure there are others.
All modern engines are fresh water cooled with a heat exchanger - much better than raw water cooled.
Check cost of spares like alternator, impellor, filters etc and don't be put off by reported Volvo prices, in a recent survey they were mid range over the spares quoted for. Also check local availability of spares and service, there have been several articles lately in the boating mags, the latest in either PBO or Sailing Today - I can't remember which.
Again check your layout of the ancillaries like silencer, water inlet position, prop shaft, prop and why not upgrade your stern gland to a non-drip type?
Good luck with your re-engining.

Re: BMC/Thornycroft

Thornycroft no longer supply factory reconditioned BMC engines. The replacement for the T90 is the T95 which is a Mitsibushi 1.5.
I have recently changed a T90 for the T95 and is is relatively straightforward one for one with minor adjustments.

As this is turning into a Beta appreciation thread I'd just like to say that I have been impressed with both the engine and after sales support. I have just put a Beta 20 into my Hurley 30 and it is splendid.

Arent you based in France? My wife's cousin had her boat re-engined in Lezardrieux and it cost well under half of the quoted price from a UK source. The French want their sailing to be affordable and their marine industry seems based around that POV - in the UK it doesnt seem to work the same way.

Re: BMC/Thornycroft

They took my neighbour's in and rebuilt it around this time last year. In fact, they offered him a swap to a 1.8 litre Leyland - basically the same core - for an extra 200(?) pounds. Perhaps (I hope!) they've simply stopped doing straight exchanges. There are lots of T 90s plugging away out there and all the parts for rebuilds are available.
