New engine, which one?

good evening all, haveing recently bought my moody 38 i have had a series of engine problems. my latest one is a water leak into the sump. yes it could be the head gasket or i think more likely a cracked cylinder head through non winterisation. i wont get a full verdict for another month as the engineer is on holiday. in the mean time however im preparing for the worst, a new engine. heres the stats, the boat is a moody 38, 1992. current engine is a perikins prima m50. in order to remove the engine i belive the teak cockpit sole has to be removed, (recently replaced, so if removed would it be damaged?) if my fears are correct id then be looking at which engine. i do like the beta engines however i do want engine that i hopefully wont have to change bed plates. you may be wondering why change the engine and not the cylinder head, like i said before if that is the case its due to poor maintenace on the engine, what would be the next thing to go wrong???? i also would never trust the engine and as i want to go on a world cruise, trusting my engine is a big thing. anyway im sure i shall get some usefull responses to this and i shall appreciate any help!
 
I'd try like mad not to lift the cockpit floor. Can it be dissembled in situ and removed piece by piece? Similarly, can a new one be installed in component form?

If the old model of engine is still available try to replace like with like. This will stop big expense on doing things like changing fuel feeds, bearers, control cables, wiring looms, prop shafts, etc and will also mean that all the current access panels are in the right places.
 
Beta will make the engine mounting pads to suit the width of your bearers, for a small extra sum. And also will do other mods to suit.
Have you put this question on the Moody Owners Association web site? There will be almost certainly have been someone who has done this. Do join if you are not already a member - not expensive and it's worth it just for the technical details on the site.

perkins stopped makeing the engine, i thought about component form but this is a moody, good sea boats, buggers to fix, even if i stripped down to the engine block ive still got no way of craneing the engine in as i have no front accsess. if is a replacement job the cockpit sole will have to removed.
 
I'm not familiar with your model, but on my Moody 33, I cut an access hatch behind the companionway ladder. I'd seen this done on another M33. It was easy to do, the panel cut out became the hatch with strips of teak around the edges, secured with four twist latches. Works really well and provides excellent access. I did this before I changed the engine as the access was appalling on the original BMC 1.5 installation - it was i mpossible to get to the front of the engine.
Was the engine installed before the deck moulding originally? Would it be possible to cut out the cockpit floor in one piece and then have four or more 'lock down' latches for security. On my M33 it has a hinged hatch for access and I had to fit two latches after survey so the hatch didn't open if I capsized! Latches fro Davey & Co.
 
on my moody 38 i have a fuel tank behind my steps and infront of the engine, so an accsess hatch is out of the question! you wouldent belive the problems ive got unless i showed you!
 
a second vote for asking the question on the Moody Owners Web site. The knowledge base there is vast and members are very happy to share their knowledge.

I would suggest Yanmar would be a good replacement engine. I used to have a 2001 Moody 38 and it came with a Yanmar and it was a good engine.
 
The Volvo D2-55 would fit perfectly to the existing engine beds. One year ago I replaced a Perkins M60, which has the same dimensions as the M50, with a Volvo D2-55. It was a simple bolt on job. But for the Moody 38 you have to look for an engine where the raw water pump is not situated at the front of the engine. I don't know if the Volvo's raw water pump can be mounted in another position. This area of the engine is not accessible at the Moody because there are only few centimeters between the engine and the tank. I'd also advice to check the exaust diameter as this is mostly different. Please appologize for my bad English. I'm from Austria.

Just re-engined myself when the old Volvo gave up the ghost. i chose a Beta 25 due to the amount of info on their web site and the ability to make engine mounts to suit your installation.
very helpful at Beta and the new engine just dropped straight in. A total of 7-10 days (not full time) to fit and fire up the new engine. Very smooth and quiet so far
 
Re-engined a Westerly Konsort 29' and approx 4 tonnes. It was an old Volvo MD11 C that was replaced. So far very impressed with the performance of the new engine and the lack of teething troubles. With the measurements that I gave Beta teh new engine dropped pretty much straight in and i did not even have to replace or change the prop shaft. Re-engine ?

Been there, done that. Similar situation with Prima 50. Blown head gasket. Slightly warped head.
Access however much better. I only had to remove the companion way and asslociated panel., disconnect the propshaft, foundation bolts, electrics water and fuel lines and lift in one go. I Considered replacing Perkins with Yanmar equivalent, but decided against it given the additional work needed , engine bearers modification, rewiring new electrical loom, instruments, plus gearbox, propeller shafting and new prop to go with it.
It was more cost effective to carry out a complete overhaul of the engine with new bearings, piston rings, re-honing of the cylinders, valve gear , rebushing etc, than installing a new engine. Parts are easily available mainly through Volvo. Fuel pump and injectors through specialist workshop. Engine hopefully now good for the next 5,000 hrs.
When the engine is out, it is also a good time to refurbish or replace the sound proofing of the engine compartment and give the bilges a good coating.
Better wait for the technician's verdict before embarking into this adventure. Sounds like a head problem;Perkins soft spot.
