had a couple of quotes in for a new engine, Yanmar GM10, which are not too bad, however the average for labour costs are a grand!

is this reasonable for removal of old engine and fitting new one, or does it sound a wee bit steep?

Has anyone had simmilar work done?

Depends what is included in those labour costs and whether this is just a question of replacing with the same engine, or a new installation including shaft and prop.

it rather depends on the sort of work needed. it may not be a straight swop (is it ever) you may need modifications to the engine mounts and some fabrication or gross realignment of the new engine. also drive plate and coupling way need replacing so you can see that to ptice this work needs a discerning eye. get several quotes before you decide I would say tha 1K is about right given that no trouble will be experienced with extraction an humping the new one back in

that sounds reasuring, thanks.

the original engine is a Stewart Sole 9hp so i guess there may be a fair bit of work involved in getting the new one to fit, the quote i favour does include prop but no mention of shaft etc.

i found 9hp to be enough power as i could never give it full revs as it didn't go any faster than 6 knots. all that happened was the bow came up high in the water.... 6 knots will have to do then eh! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

it seems i can get the engine in the boat a little cheaper however, i am keen to just deal with one person so if anything goes wrong the fitter cant blame the supplier or vice versa.

thanks for your coments fellas, Andy

the old engine is nearly 20 years old as far as i can tell and i dont think there are many remaining, and also the cylinder head gasget blew so it is full of oil, diesel and water.

do you think it has any worth?

What do you call steep? Car main dealer £60/ 90 per hour , any service company £25/ 40 per hour. How much is your man charging you , or do you expect him to work for less money thaan you believe your skill and experience is worth?

From the additional information you've given, you're getting a fair price. Whoever fits the engine will probably have to remake the bearers, mould in a new stern-tube and fit a new prop.

In all about 40 hours work.

If you feel it' excessive why don't you fit it yourself?

i had no idea there was as much as 40 hours work in the job. maybe it doesn't seem too bad when all is considered, the shock i got was that the new engine is only costing £2k so for the labour to be £1k was a surprise to me. i'm not tight i just wanted to check with you all that i wasn't making a mistake.
as a "ballpark" figure you guys think it's not excessive, so i'll continue to shop around with a rough idea of what i'll be quoted.
many thanks for your opinions, Andy

We changed the 2QM20 against a new 3YM30 on our Nic31, including propeller and shaft. Total labor: 64 hours, but the result looks very good.
