New engine install - Instrument panel is dead!

Kinell, this really isn't rocket science. Just test for power either side of the fuse and either side of the panel on/off switch, in that order. Simples.

Power is at the starter, so it either :

isn't getting to the fuse
isn't getting past the fuse
isn't getting from the fuse to the panel button
isn't getting through the switch

Two minutes will tell you where the fault lies.

I'm not sure I should put my hands up to this but, here goes.

The fault was entirely due to an error on my part.

I connected the neg on my multimeter to the engine block, and worked my way up the positive line, pretty much in the order Paul stated in #21.

The multimeter showed 13.4v every where, both sides of the fuse and the switch.

Much head scatching ensued.

I disconnected the neg from the block, and tested using the neg supply at the panel, nothing. So I had pos all along, just no neg.

So I started to trace back the negative, consulting the wiring diagram, I realised that I had missed out the neg connection from the block to the B- on the aternator. And, B- feeds the relay and instrument panel. Once I made and installed that cable, everthing works as intended.

What helped to confuse me previously, is that I already had 3 black wires on the B-, but 2 of these come from the charge regulator.

So a silly mistake cost me a lot of time, and helpful people on the forum some of theirs too, apologies for that.

On the positive side (pun intended), I started the replacement process wanting to learn as much as could about the engine, and how it works etc, and I have made a fair start.

That mistake has made by many,myself included. The neg. is as important as the pos.
Glad you got it sorted. Sorry if I caused you or others confusion with my 2000series wiring diagrams-similar-but not exactly the same.
