Has anyone replaced the engine in a Jeanneau Espace 1000?

What with?

The existing one is a BMW 50Hp, some had Perkins engines. The drive is straight shaft through a stuffing box and P bracket/Cutless bearing.

Since it's not likely that loads of folk have done this, any recommendations for an engine, I only know about 20Hp engines in Centaurs and the like.

The boat is on the Clyde.

Thanks in advance.

Those Espace's were nearly 11 meters... and motorsailors.... I looked at one once and she had a Perkins 50hp.... Given all that top hamper.... I suspect 50hp is comfy..... they weigh about 6000kg....

Engine for an Espace

Beta have a 50hp. http://www.betamarine.co.uk/newsite/downloads/datasheets/seagoing-070508/Beta 50 S_ds.pdf
4 cylinder, 2.2 litre, 260kg

Beta have a reputation of providing mounting brackets to suit the existing engine beds.

Dependant on shaft speed and direction, a new prop and maybe shaft would need to be added on to the shopping list.

There also tends to be more monies spent as 'might as well do it now when the engine is out' kicks in.

There is not a lot to choose among the main suppliers in terms of quality, reliability or price. They will all do a 50hp or thereabouts engine, most of which will be significantly smaller and lighter than the Perkins or BMW.

Your choice may depend on a number of factors, but usually the layout of service items and choice of gearbox ratios are key - plus of course availability and service where you are located. When you examine all the brochures and spec sheets, you may find colour is one of the main differentiating features!

Hi Bob, I was talking to your dad the other day while he was antifouling the boat. I thought they would be going back in during the week. Does this mean they are having problems?

Yep, it sounds like they have got something sorted out now. They were going to launch on Wednesday, or maybe there was water in the river untill Wednesday then they had to go down river. Anyway, they are still on the hard.
I will get a propper story when they get home, if I see them before we set off to the SB cruise.
As I understand it someone based in Sandpoint is fitting a new engine sometime soon. They hope to be sailing in May.

The Espace is a motorsailer, a bit more saily than a Fisher, but there is pleanty of power for going to windward hence the 50 horse engine.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Pop along to Largs and check with Gordon at Western. They can supply a range of engines including Vetus conversions.
Is your engine really beyond repair??

Probably not, but it's 30 yrs old and it's being changed.

It's his money, his choice, you can't take it with you.

The new one will be quieter, smoother, lighter & more reliable. He will be reassured by all of that. I was glad I changed mine at 30 years old, but I had rebuilt it a few times before eventually giving up on it.

Wish 'em luck & a good season.
