I've just had the first service done on my brand new Volvo Penta that was installed last year.

Despite the expensive cost of the service, I was told they don't actually change anything like oil and filters! It's just a lot of checking etc.

However, despite the warranty stamp I didn't get anything else like a check sheet or tolerance information!... something to show that checks were actually done!

Is this normal for the 1st service?

servicing small engines is a con
i installed my Nanni but clever enough to service it, that would void the warranty.
The warranty is very limited if one reads the exclusions.
I have done all the work over the past 14 yrs & saved a fortune

If it is a requirement of the warranty then all you need is the stamp/signature should things go bang in the middle of the night on a lee shore; the risk is theirs.

I was on the boat when this was done. As the link in post#5 shows it is mainly a visual check so there is no obvious evidence that it has been done. However it is I think reasonable to do these checks as a condition of the warranty and it has a cost, which could either be as part of the original engine cost or as now paid to a dealer.

The charge I was unhappy about was the next service which is a condition of the extended 2 year warranty. This was £300 and in the end I paid it and had the dealer do the service. That was the last dealer service as now I do what sailorman suggests and do it myself. Not difficult and the engine (D1 30) has been trouble free.

Not in my experience. The first service on my D1-30 was carried out at 12 months and was a condition of the 2 year warranty. The VP engineer did lots of checks (and left a detailed checksheet) as well as changing the oil, oil filter, primary and secondary fuel filters, and the impeller. The cost was £272 in 2015.

In addition there should have been a visual check at 50 hours. This is just the visual check I referred and I was present at. The standard charge for that is £90+VAT - so £108.

The more expensive one is as you describe, but mine was a bit more as the saildrive oil was changed as well.

No travel charge as the dealer is only 500 yards away from the boat!

Yes, I had the visual check done by my local VP dealer, don't remember what it cost, can't have been much. Sounds like the OP may have been overcharged if his "service" was just the FSI visual check.

When I installed my Beta 25hp, all I had to have was to have the installation checked by the local Beta dealer - all I had to do was replace the ss coach bolts that held the engine flexible mounts to the bearers(from 6mm to 8mm Ø). No charge from memory and I've done all my servicing since then.

This was the other reason why I started this thread... My engine is at 54 hours and a year old now. I had heard about the 50 hour visual check and the mechanic also confirmed that there would be no oil change etc.

I had thought with the oil and filter being a year old it would have been changed! So it looks like I paid £180+vat for a visual check!

The FSI visual check should be done within the first 180 days. The maintenance schedule requires oil and filter changes every 12 months. As it seems that wasn't done, technically your second year's warranty may be void.

Great! :(

The only reason I let them near my engine was for the warranty!

Thanks for the feedback... I do really appreciate the advice of this forum.

I'd suggest you take it up with Volvo Penta, not the dealer, and get confirmation that they'll honour the warranty even though the dealer hasn't done the correct work.
