Just got around to reading PBO and notice that Eberspacher are making a new combined diesel/shore power unit that will heat water and provide blown hot air, all for under £1300. Am I missing something here, but that is the same cost as a normal diesel heating unit.

Any comments?

Thanks

I have yet to see the article but if, as you say that it has a blown hot air feeding off shore power plus hot water, it must be good news. I can put away my fan heater and enjoy on board hot showers on Sunday mornings at Yarmouth.

My existing unit coked up earlier this year. Kruger suggested Fuel Set as a way to avoid future coking up. I have yet to see the results in the heating system but it does make a noticable difference in the smooth running of the engine

From what I can understand, I think it will need a separate hot water storage tank, but it would save any fiddling with the engine and also save me having to do a freshwater cooling conversion. From what I can see in previous posts, a lot of people seem very keen on the idea of on demand hot water heating. 4 star luxury here I come.

I think you might be mixing up systems. If you check out the Eberspaecher Website, you will see that they offer the standard airheating units and alternatively water heating units for use in conjunction with radiators. The latter can be fitted with fans to boost airflow, but this is not the same as hot air from electrical shore power. The hot water produced can be used to heat shower water, and or the engine cooling system for warm starts.

Maybe no hot showers just yet.

Have a look at the inland boating press (sorry IPC) to read about the statement this company have apparently made about the use of their heaters and gas oil (red diesel).

Also have a look at the latest Mikuni add that rather confirms that Eber did make the statement (otherwise I am sure there would be legal action).

If anyone is serious about using any of these forced draught diesel heaters at any time other than with engine running or on shore power WITH battery charging, please do a power audit on your electrics. As far as I can see all these units are a bit touchy about voltage when starting - it just depends upon how easy it is to reset them if they do an automatic shut down.

Eber D1L has no problems with power - or at least not the pronblems associated with the D1LC and later. If you are lucky enough to still have a D1L there is no 5 strikes and you are out - even overtemp cut out is manual reset - (press the red button).

I just sreviced my D1L after 4 years of never having been used and it now works a treat although I did have to fit new bearings in the fan motor (I am not paying £180 + vat for a new motor when bearings only cost around £3.80 incl vat).

I have also replaced the old Eber ducting with aluminium emission control ducting at around a quarter of the price of eber ducting and it is so much more flexible. All the ducting has been insulated with non combustible foam insulation and now one cannot hold one's hand within about 8" of the outlet - nice hot air rather than luke warm air when using the eber ducting - I don't want to heat my aft locker not engine bay just the cabins.

It is a new unit called the Combitronic- it has a calorifier, shore power immersion heater and forced air ducted heating, all in one box. Surely it can't use any more electrical power than conventional diesel heating and the only other power consumtion will be the pump for the water. It does sound perfect for my needs and I was just wondering if anybody had any experience of them.

Look at

<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.eberspacher.com/combitronic.php?section=products>http://www.eberspacher.com/combitronic.php?section=products</A>

Am I missing something fundamental here?

I see it now thanks. Interestingly it is not mentioned on their Home/German website. Maybe they want to try it out in the UK first!

I think that this may be the price for the heater only - you will need to buy seperate ducting and controller; which aren't cheap.
