New Cruising Chute: Experiences of sail quality wanted.

OK, plenty on here with cruising chutes, so perhaps each of you can post a reply to this.

How deep can you sail with it, without using a pole, and without the sail collapsing?

It would help if you stated the make and type of the sail.

Aha, I see now what you mean. Never flown a Chute or Spinny so haven't seen it in action. In fact I'm researching a possible Chute for the Muddy as we speak so this is all good gen. For the price I lean towards the Seateach (I've spent so much on the old girl I need to be a bit more frugal). Am I right in thinking that the Snuffer has a (wire?) strop at the top and the Chute a strop at the bottom on to the stem head fitting?

If you want tri-radial and price is an issue, you have to look at Momentum Sails. By having not quite one-size-fits-all (actually 19 sizes as I recall) and then buying those 19 sizes in bulk rather than an individual order for every sail, they keep their prices well below the competition. A simple chart of your i-j measurements tells you which size will suit your boat. They have three cuts: a tigher-reaching asymmetric, a cruising symmetric (don't take it above 80 degrees to the wind) and a conventional symmetrical spinnaker. Google them.

If you do without a pole do watch for the chute resting on your guard rails (or pulpit rails), the forces are considerable and if gybing and the tack rope catches you could bend something.

I just looked, and have e-mailed them for a quote. It will be interestig to see how they compare, especially with Seateach who are also selling standardised sizes.
