A new crew member comes on board next week in the shape of a West Highland White Terrier pup (male - yet to be named but definitely NOT MoBoDog ! ).
Any hints and tips for induction training will be welcomed but a few questions for starters:
1. Are doggy lifejackets de rigeur or naff and are some better than others?
2. Are dogs happy being left in cockpit (canopies closed etc) ?
3. How is it likely to react to MoBoDuck (incidentally, we have a real problem here. It is now pretty obvious that MoBoDuck is , in fact, MoBoGoose. We have howver called it MoBoDuck long enough for it to have a severe psychological personality disorder complex if we now try to tell it its a Goose - wot a bummer ! )

As for names for new crew member I rather favour 'Bosun' or 'Lockie' but swbmtb is rather taken with 'Brodie' - any other suggestions ...............pics in my <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.arweb.co.uk/argallery/tahoe>P32 album</A>.

Ahhhhhh.... Pretty, doesn't Brodie have overtones of Brodie and Doyle aka Professional's....
Oh no that was Bodie!, how about Anchor for when he disgraces himself on the carpet, our cats were always named after alchohol Glayva, Chivas & Whisky.

We've had both sorts of dogs. Pyranian Mountain dogs that we did not even atempt to get afloat. A Labrador X Sheepdog that loved boats but spent most of the time jumping out and swimming behind the boat. He would not have thanked you for a life jacket as it would just have slowed him down. A Retriever that every time it got rough or some one panicked, would go and sit in the dinghy on the davits. Maybe he was trying to tell us something. Ok for dogs on rivers, mostly they like it, but on the sea it's just plain cruel. No trees!! Oh and for a name. What about VOLVO!!

We have two shelties,

1. Ducks and geese keep away from our boat so this might help your problem.
2. Dogs in cockpit / canopy (with lots of water) ok providing not a baking hot day and the can get out of the sun (shade)
3. great alarm system
4. Not sure about going to sea, I think it could be unkind to subject a dog to sea travel ?
5. We mainly leave teh dogs in the cabin when we go away from the boat or in locks. (better safe than sorry)

How about Mac 'B' or Bee for short......yea go on just think what you can make of that when he's good, or when he's naughty - it also satisfies the differences between you and SWMBO....you can both imagine that it is really the name 'you' chose.

No, they'd all gone some time previous so dont know how old Andy's paper was !
Found this one down on the south coast so rushed down Monday night and sorted.
As for teaching it the facts of life I'll be quite happy to get it respecting my new cockpit carpet for starters!

I can only speak from experience
1. Doggie lifejacket good idea as the one we have has a big metal ring on top which makes it much easier to lift the stupid creature from the pontoon or dinghy onto the boat. Once, I resorted to using a davit for lifting purposes
2. Leaving mutt under cockpit canopy is not a good idea as, firstly, it will fry and, secondly, it will escape. We had one incedent in Bembridge where, blissfully unaware as we ate dinner in a local restaurant, our hound escaped from cockpit and ran amok around the marina being chased by assorted boaties. He bit two of them but, luckily, they were yotties so that was OK
3. Stupid question. Dogs are genetically programmed (at least ours is) to savage any other form of animal life. It'll all end in tears

Tip: Dont go anywhere near Ramsgate with a dog as you cant land it in the harbour due to customs regulations and the harbour staff go apoplectic if you try
