Thanks to all those who contributed.
Its amazing how a machine advertsed at a bit over £300 in a newspaper ad eventually comes out at over £700 if you tweak the spec so that it's actually useful.

That is why it is so difficult to compare one pc with another, and also why I tend to build the machine myself, cause it is a lot cheaper that way, and also you end up with the spec you want.

I followed the discussion with much interest having recently had to replace mine (motherboard failure).

I did indeed end up paying exactly £300 (without monitor - had one). 2.8GHz; 256MB; 40GB. However I have no need for a special graphics card or enormous hard disk. Have since added another 256MB (£30) and the spare harddisk from the old one, which is nice for back-ups.

I would have built one myself, but the cost buying Windows made it quite uneconomical at this level. (anyone after 448MB of PC133 memory or 550w new PSU, please PM me)

Wondered if anyone would be interested..thats why didn't include in post.

Bought an 'e-machines' at Curry's. Essentially they're just generic products these days, and like washing machines you won't know what they're like inside 'till you've bought it.

In fact, besides performing faultlessly, its very nicely built inside. Far better than the IBM NetVista I had before. (Heresey, because they pay my pension; ... but they've sold the PC bit now anyway).

Great thing was being able to walk in the store, buy it, take it home. No messing with ordering/delivery. Strangely, (big out of town site) Curry's had better deal than PC WORLD next door. I guess DSG work on the basis that people will think it's 'competition'.
