New Chichester Screwfix store will not sell to me.......

That was the specific case, but the principle holds true for anything displayed for sale. The vendor is under no compulsion to sell it to you.

Our local PC World have the same policy and I was paying with CASH. Said they could not complete the sale without my details. Dumped the lots on the counter, wished them a nice day and walked out.

That takes me back. Some of us poor B....s had to learn all that b...cks, Ingram & Little, Phillips & Brooks, Lewis & Avery, , Carlill & carbolic smokeball factory... hows that after 30 years? I quit to read Engineering instead.
I didn't recognise Partridge & Crittenden though.

Now we study the Colregs instead. A bit more relevant

I read engineering and I had to do all that stuff. Not sure about the first two you mention, but I do remember the Carbolic Smokeball Company. And what about the snail in the lemonade bottle?
And I refused to give my details to my local Screwfix outlet recently, went home and rang to complain to their customer service in Yeovil, and they offered me a £10 voucher as an apology, which of course I accepted. "Where shall we send it to, sir?" was the immediate next question!

Yes, Carbolic Smoke Ball Co, Donoghue v Stevenson (the dead snail case), Blythe v Birmingham Water, Hedley-Byne v Heller, Home Office v Dorset Yacht Co ...

I aced my RICS exams in contract and tort with the highest ever recorded mark (back then) ... ah, fond memories!

Have you ever tried to get some very simple information from Dell Computers? Until you've given all your personal details they won't even give you any information, let alone sell you something! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Unfortunately their computer threw a wobbly and wouldn't accept it. The assistant hadn't heard of T Hancock esq, either, but got his own back later when he looked up stock "Haven't got one sir" with a big grin! 'Oh yes he did'.

Got into trouble with SWMBO (who was with me) for wasting time.... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Maybe their computer is programmed to reject famous addresses?
