I had a friend who's Halberg Rassey seemed to have every seam on the boat go at once. Sail Cover, small hood even some of the sails. The quotations were horrific. Being somewhat of a Handyman he bought a heavy duty Sewing Machine and re-stitched everything himself. It was quite amusing to see him sitting in the Car Park at Hamble Point Marina with a cigar clamped in his mouth repairing some sail or other.

Long way from you but we are having a new canopy made this winter by Chris Potts of Marine and Industrial covers. He has repaired ours and his prices are very competitive. The quote he has given us for a new hood is very reasonable and his work is top notch. He makes original canopies for Westwood. We are willing to wait until his quiet spell around christmas time for our new hoods so we know we dont get a rush job. :)

just had mine done recently by Mac Hoods based at Wootens boat yard (winter hill, Cookham)

did a very good job, and did it quickly for us (as we wanted to keep using the boat over the winter months)

Did you specify the bigger windows, slimmer canvas sections and different roof line or was that something the canopy maker did through choice?

he recommended most of the changes, like bigger clear windows (which we really appreciate when sitting on the back of the boat in the evenings). One of the things I specified was the design of the front panels (which you can see in the picture now has two square areas), so that if required, just the panel infront of the driver can just be rolled up to allow greater visiability, when all the other panels are left down. This has worked out great on occasions when maybe coming up to a lock or when berthing in the rain, as the rest of the boat is under cover, but by just rolling the front section on my side, I still am able to see clearly where I am going.
All the side sections have straps on them, which allows them just to be rolled up and secured when going along (no need to take them all off and store them down below, again great when it suddenley rains or gets cold as you just un-pop them and they drop down.

We are having a new canopy made for NC this winter as we are now fed up of throwing money at the original one to modify and repair it. We are using Chris Potts at Burton Waters, Lincoln as we are very impressed with his workand pricing. He has a pattern for the S23/25 but is willing to modify it to suit clients needs. The windscreen being split in two sounds like a good option as we often find during the winter that we take the front section off which results in the whole cockpit (and sometimes cabin if i forget to shut the door!) getting damp.

Any other suggestions greatly recieved.

Just noticed your genny. What do you use that for?

We recently had an enforced 3 day stay in Boston (due to weather) with no hook up and the two domestic batteries managed fine. We had to boil the kettle for hot water to wash the pots but that was no great hardship. Luckily we were near a shower but if not we could have run the engine for 20 minutes to heat the water if necessary.

Just curious as i cant think of anything onboard an S23 that would warrant a genny.
