Solent Coastguard are broadcasting a navigational warning about a wreck on Lymington banks at 50 43.10N 001 30.16W marked by two cardinal light bouys. Could that be what you saw?
This wreck was well adertised on the Solent CG MMSI broadcasts and by NM on Navtex. As I understand it, it is probably a very old wreck which has somehow just been "discovered". The minum depth at the wreck is quoted as 20.5m and I can't understand what all the fuss is about as I have never heard of any ship approaching that draught using the West Solent. I think the biggest ship that used to use the Needles Channel was the QEII but since her grounding off the N. American coast, I don't think she has been seen in the W. Solent. Any way, I can't imagine the QEII drawing more than 12m.
Thanks for confirming that. We had exactly that discussion on our boat at the weekend. SWMBO saying it must be 2.5m or they wouldn't be making a fuss about it. Surely Southampton doesn't have any 20m deep berths so where would a 20m deep vessel be going?
Ddin't see myself this weekend when fishing at Sconce bouy but according to my charts it's on the rhumb line between Lymington and Yarmouth about 2/3 across from Lymington and in 25m of water. You might get the odd trawl going over it but otherwise it is well out of the way of our tender keels.
