Is it me?
Had a look at the magnificent new building today (prior to Saturday's grand opening ceremony) and was very disappointed to find that the only part of it of use to berth holders and visitors is the new chandlery.
All the rest seems to be solely for the use and benefit of staff members.

SIlly old me thought they would be improving the facilities for the punters. Perhaps the marina owners just want to show their customers how much profit they are making!
Rant over, thank you for reading this far.

The shower blocks have been upgraded. The new block in the West harbour is pretty good IMO :).

As far as the new building is concerned - I like it. What bits do you want to visit? There are 2 clean & tidy public loos with wash basins. You can go upstairs & chat to Bob about your hauling out requirements. You can visit accounts too. I'm sure you could also go & have a chat with the MD in his office if you have something to discuss . I believe there is quite a large stores area which services the chandlery & workshop.

The chandlery is still the same but better laid out & carries the usual stuff necessary.

There does seem to be a certain amount of anti SYH feeling on this forum .

But hey ho - each to their own :D

For what its worth, we have always been made most welcome when visiting SYH and there are some marinas not a million miles away that would struggle to match it.

I did think the old chandlery was a bit muddled, so look forward to having a look round soon.

Fair winds!

That would be nice.
Anything would be nice - even a mere willingness to acknowledge our existence or indeed the existence of a waiting list. :(
Hi Will,

Strange that - I stayed on the hard at SYH 99-2001 & they were very accommodating when I needed some help with epoxy coating the hull. I then went to Southwold for 3 years & eventually got fed up of being on a fixed, rotten staging & all the hassle & incidental wear & tear.

Late autumn 2004 I went to SYH & put my name on the waiting list (was quoted a 3 year wait).

Dec 23rd 2004 & my boat fell out of her cradle at the yard at Southwold & suffered quite extensive damage.

I went to SYH early/mid-January in order to ask them to quote for repairs.

As I walked through the chandlery doors up to the counter - before I could even open a conversation about a repair quote - Chris behind the counter said "I've got a berth for you"!

Funny old world.

Isn't it just?

Whenever I stop by (4-5 times a year) I get the same (standard) reply: We will be able to find you a berth for Winter, but we can only offer you a swinging mooring for the Summer. Are you on the waiting list? Followed by an embarrassed silence when the spreadsheet tells them we've been on the waiting list since 2001.

I too have been on the list 10 years, however after speaking to them each winter several times for the past 9 I have given up as I am sick of their attitude. They make you feel like you are begging for a favour rather than entering into a business transaction.

I once dared to ask to see the list but was told it wasn't as simple as that yeh who are they kidding. However I did hear that they produced one for the council when they wanted to extend the marina.

I don't think there is any malace in their actions just that they are lazy and if you happen to walk in when they have a berth its easier to give it to you rather than contacting people on the list. Or perhaps it depends on your handshake :-)
