New Boom

The boom on my boat is an old Proctor round section 4.2m long. I would like to relocate the main sheet from the cockpit to the cabin archtop. so that the cockpit is free from ropes and lines. The existing boom will not be able to take the additional loading that will be generated as the fix point will be moving from the end of the boom to almost the middle of the boom. I will be looking for a thicker oval section boom, new or second hand; apart from approaching my local rigging company, any other suggestion where to purchase a boom from?
 
I replaced the boom on my first boat, went with Z Spars who were very easy to deal with and the price seemed reasonable. I happened to be getting a new mainsail at the same time, from Kemp, who are very close by and were happy to liaise to make sure that everything would match up.
 
The first thing I'd do is to wander round a few of the tattier boatyards in the area to see what I could find.

Of course, I've only got a little boat; if I had an Oyster 50, I'd be less optimistic about finding something.
 
I used z spars for my previous boat - they had a second hand one which they cut down for me and I had to pop rivet the end back on. About half the price of a new one.
Also look on ebay where I bought one for my current boat, complete with reefing lines. Did have to drive to London to get it but considerably cheaper than a new one.
 
For a mid boom mainsheet attachment, I am very pleased with the sturdy Selden fittings on mine. Also the taller section shape of my replacement boom much better resists bending under the loading from a loose footed mainsail, for example the foot of the sail keeps its shape in gusts.
 
I have a second hamd boom about the right length, it's Z Spars (or Z Diffusion). It has sustained some abrasion in a limited area and a small dent which won't affect performance, I was going to paint it. It's a proper modern boom and not bad looking in spite of the damage.
