Hi all

I am a new boater, i have recently purchased a used 14ft dejon cruiser which i have attached a few pics, the metal part at the front of the boat has corroded and needs replaced, anyone any idea where to purchase one and what its called please??

I am looking to put some electrics in any advice what to put in and where to purchase equipment.

I am also wanting to link the engine up to the remote throttle at the front of the boat as it is quite difficult to steer when sitting at the rear of the boat the engine with the tiller. Any advise??
I have a little mariner 5hp outboard.

I am also looking to purchase and anchor, any ideas of size and type??

Anyone know where to buy a manual for the outboard or where i can find one on the net?

I aslo had the boat out on the lake a couple of weeks ago and the lever that selects forward and reverse stuck in that mode but eventually released after a few minutes. And one other problem with the engine is sometimes it doesnt select forward drive, engine runs fine...

Lots of questions but would appreciate some help from an experienced boater.

Firstly, welcome to the forum.

First posts tend to get a bit lost as the admin process sits on them for a while. I have no experience to help with your boat, but others on here will when they see your post. Good luck!

Let's deal with the engine first.

Has the engine had a good service recently ?
Is the fuel really clean, and if a 2stroke, the correct ratio ?
Does the cooling water come out of the rightplace (a 'tell'tale' stream
Does the engine go into astern (reverse) and ahead (forward) easily at the engine end, not using the remote gear shift) ?
Is the engine trimmed properly (the angle of the leg looks a bit too close to the transom) ?

Electrics
Do you already have a 'service' or domestic battery in place, securely fastened down ?
What electrics do you want ? Interior light, nav lights, 12v power socket, instruments ?
How good are you are using a multimeter, and doing wire connectors ?

On a small boat you will get away with two colours (black and red) as the wiring is likely to be simple. Purists will say used 'tinned' wire to resist corrosion. Contralube is a good anti-corrosion jelly. The normal Draper car wiring pliers and joiners will suffice, unless you want to make the wiring bullet-proof.

Even on a smallish boat, it's worth getting a book such as "12v Bible"


Anchor.
Where are you using the boat ? What is the bottom (ground) made of ? Weed/sand/rock/mud ? How deep is the water ? Anchor choice really depends on those answers.

What have you got for the boat, and for the crew ?

The engine hasn't had a service at all, the nearest place to have that done is miles from here, could do with a manual and could probably do it myself.
I mix 1 oil to 50 petrol and it seems to be running ok, it more the gearbox I'm having trouble with and not sure exact model therefore finding it difficult getting parts if I need them, there is a number on side of motor but when I google it can't find anything.
I don't know where water is supposed to come out of, I assume the engine is water cooled?
I don't have a remote gearshift if I want to go reverse to forward there's a little lever on the engine marked forward, reverse and neutral that I move.
I wouldn't have a clue about trimming the engine, how do I know about the angle the engine has to be?

I don't have any wiring or electrics on boat at the moment, I want to start from scratch and not sure what type of accessories lights etc it would need.

I have only used the boat on lake Ullswater not sure what bed is but eventually want to take boat on firth of Clyde and sea lochs but I wouldn't do that as I think I will require a motor of about 25hp for the tidal waters. So the anchor I would require would be one that I could use for different types of beds.

I have 4 life jackets for the crew and that's about it, thanks for your feedback and taking the time to reply, any more tips and info greatly recieved.

Can you put the ID number on the thread please; the pic is a bit difficult to read.


If you are going to put electrics in, then the basic requirement is nav lights, a couple of interior lights, a socket for a spotlight, and a feed for e.g. depth sounder and log.

The problem with reverse / ahead may be the lack of maintenance / oil in the gearbox, or even that you might be keeping the revs a bit high when shifting. You can do the necessary servicing yourself easily.


But we need the number to find you a manual and for more suggestions.
 
Thanks for the info, really helpful. One other thing I meAnt to ask is I have a remote throttle, can I connect this on to the throttle in the engine, is there a part I can use for this
 
It appears you have remote steering. Engines with remote throttle are usually built that way, as the twist throttle as fitted to your engine is not fitted in the remote version. As to the availability for parts for a conversion, I would imagine they would be hard to find as the engine is not a current model.
 
Dejon apparently was manufactured by Croydon Marine, later by and renamed to, Norman (http://www.normanboats.co.uk/brief_history_of_norman_cruisers.htm)

I believe the engine number translates into a Yamaha 5 hp Long Shaft 1979 (as Mariner was then either a Yamaha, Mercury or Tohatsu in disguise).

Yamaha have made user manuals available on their homepage, albeit not for all years. The oldest 5 hp can be found here:

Workshop manuals are available, Clymer (now owned by Haines) may have something.

The metal part is referred to as a rail, placed on the bow also called 'bow rail'. An exact match might need to be made to measure but there are several options of standard designs or even parts to combine to build your own.

A larger engine should respect the manufacturer max. hp recommendation. Any type plate on board stating this? Older posts on web boards mention 40 hp giving 26 knots, but depending on your planned use of the boat this could be overkill. The transom of the boat needs to be in good condition for a larger outboard, especially if considering 4-strokes (heavier than 2-strokes).

And a final hint: Make a budget before starting the project. Boaty things tend to cost more than you think :nonchalance:
