New Boat

Hi, I've been lurking around forum for a few weeks now and really impressed by wealth of knowledge and experience of forum members. As I have now bought my first MoBo I thought I would register.
Anyhow almost total newbie to Motor Boating and have just purchased a 1990 Fairline Sprint (6.2l GM Diesel recent fit from Samurai Marine) from Poole which gets delivered to Troon Cruising Club on West Coast of Scotland this Friday. Will be lifted onto my mooring on the following Monday.
I have taken a helmsman course (on a very nice Birchwood 37 footer) with a local instructor which means I wont cause mayhem in the marina and has been a great experience as I negotiated a 16 mile trip from Lamlash to Troon in a force 6 (quite an adventure) which was great fun.
Any advice on what to do, checks to run etc for when the boat hits the water for first time would be most welcome as well as anything to look out for regards this kind of boat.

Hello, like you I'm brand new to boating and haven't made it onto the water yet, but have been reading through the forums.
I'm sure it won't be long before someone comes to your aid but you could try the RYA site for more info. Unfortunately for me I'm struggling to identify and register my third (possibly fourth) hand boat before I can get started. Lots of luck.

Not sure you have been reading for long enough, do a search for "Samurai Marine" on this forum in the last year, I believe your boat has been discussed on here before, I dont know the full story but just remeber people discussing problems with the diesel conversion!!!

Was/Is the boat called White Knight??

Yes, thats the one, I can never remember how to do the links.

Hopefully he has had a sea trail and everthing is ok with the boat, from my quick reading of the thread it was only caution not a no go.

Hi, and welcome to the forum. I had a Fairline Sprint for many years and only sold it earlier this year, and she went to Scotland as well. The Sprint is a great little boat and you will (should) have great fun in her. I'd buy one again anytime. However, not with that engine conversion!! You will have seen other posts on here!!! The reputation of Samurai conversions is not good. I hope you don't become another statistic.

If she goes like this, then be very happy!

It's not a shipbuilder you'll need, it will be an engineer! The boat itself is solid, you'll not have any trouble in that regard. Anyway, good luck.

I've had dealings with the Samurai chaps father, a real @@@@@ and even he said his son was a plonker with absolutely no regard for customers.

However the Samurai engines weren't all bad, my best mates son who is a marine engineer installed them on his boat and had no problems at all with the engines.

I assume this is the same Samurai that offer the 6.2 Diesel for fitting to Land Rovers, in that respect I have heard of many issues regarding them. Especially with spares supply.

Being an american engine though importing cheap spares shouldn't be too hard? People who build performance Chevy V8's over here import the parts directly and it is very cheap as I understand.

Don,t know about the engine bit on yours but driven one a few times for a friend when he was learning, proper little boat.

I'm base up the Clyde in Largs. Who did you do your course with?? If you need bailing out with the engine set up give me a bell..I know the very man to sort it out..

Thanks Clyder. New boat is on it's way up today, arrives tomorrow and will be in the water on Monday in Troon. Managed to contact previous owner to allay my fears regarding the history of the craft and looking forward to cruising with the kids, dogs and SWMBO as the regulars on here refer to.

Do you berth at Largs Marina? I joined Troon Cruising Club and have a cheap berth along the wall at Troon. Only two other Motor Boats in the club apparently.

I did my course with Second Wind Sailing out of Troon. Really knowledgeable and pleasant English guy called Steve Tyrer. Enjoyable weekend just myself and one other student plenty of hands on, MOB and berthing practice. Highly recommended. Link below has details.
