Hi Everyone,

Having sold my old cruiser earlier this year, I'm now looking for a replacement

I've seen a very well looked after Profile 33, however the seller states that the gearbox has been replaced, it has a perkins 4236 with Borg Warner reduction gearbox, I understand that means the engine is offset from the drive shaft, and will mean additional costs if the engine ever needed to be replaced, I intend to keep my next boat for quiet a long time , should I be concerned about this and the fact that the gearbox is reconditioned and not been replaced with new,, if you can still get new Borg Warner boxes.

Your advice would be greatly appreciate

Is this the boat in Carrick on Shannon? I think it’s ex Carrick Craft as they all ran 4236’s, most hire boats on the Shannon ran them actually. Why are you worrying about replacement? That engine is lightly stressed and will push that hull right up to its hull speed. They’re tough engines too and tolerant of abuse and they are, or at least were, in production until recently as the M90 so loads of replacements and spares. That’s a nice boat by the way, my uncle was looking at it too.

Thanks for your reply, no this particular boat has always been in private hands, but I do know about the ex carrick craft one, ithink the engine has been replaced as she has a Kubota engine, not sure about ex hire boats, some say avoid as they've been knocked about and have had a hard life, others say ex hire will be well maintained and you can get a newer boat for your money, so really not sure which would be the better purchase,

What did your uncle think of the ex carrick craft boat

Based on experience I would avoid hire boats on the shannon. Cheaper to buy a clean, privately owned boat in the long run.

I liked the one that you are looking at, she well spec'd, looks clean and seems to have a GRP liner which they don't seem to all have. I think they are a lovely boat for inland waterways.

There was a Profile 33 for sale around a year or two ago and it looked fairly complete. I remember sending it to a friend of mine who was looking for a boat.
It popped up for sale again recently but the new owner had totally gutted it. Big job to get her back to where it was.

There is one for sale in Keyhaven at the moment, don't know much about it other than it only goes in the water for a few months of the year and appears to be in excellent condition. Let me know if you need any more details as it just has a sign on it in the small boatyard there. Worth a look I would say.

I always liked the look of the P33, quite elegant and classy with the rounded hull towards the rear, the only thing that let it down aesthetically was the patio door from the saloon to the aft cockpit.
