New boat test pics from MBM November - 35ft tests and Fairline 55

So you've basically repeated the Sq55 test from MBY last month? That's the kind of thing that pisses off subscribers to both magazines like me. If you're going to do the same articles, it's not worth buying both mags. There were loads of new boats at SIBS. Surely you could have tested something else?

Hi Mike,

It's an interesting point, but the magazines and their editorial teams are not one and the same. While they do tend to cover different sizes of boats generally, some crossover is inevitable.

As I say they are two different magazines, it's just that they sit under the same publisher. If you were buying two motorboat magazines at the newsstand and didn't know their affiliations then you would expect to see some similar content and that's probably the way to look at it. That and the fact that you'll get two opinions on the same boat!

That said, I don't work on either magazine and neither am I a publisher, so this is my opinion only.

its interesting the 35 ft review

I guess it is a nice battle between Sealine and Atlanits,
the A 35 Plus is IMO a clever boat, but missing a good spacious bathing platfrom for tender stowage

Sealine is the most spacious of the bunch, but that transom door spoils everything
I am surprise you did not test the HT version, as versus the boat tested it would make the most sense..

Dan, it's poor marketing because people like me will eventually decide to subscribe to only one mag if there's too much duplication and I'm sure neither mag wants to lose subscribers. I've been a subscriber to both mags for more years than I care to remember but this kind of duplication really tests my loyalty. You're part of the same organisation so surely it wouldn't take too much effort to avoid duplication

The test of the 55 is entirely our own, but we've only featured it as a three-page seatrial and not a full-blown boat test. The big test this month has been reserved for two classic MBM boats - the Grandezza 28W and Nord Star 28 Patrol.

I buy Evo and Car Magazine. When the new Mercedes 5 Series Quattro is launched I don't expect it to appear in one but not the other, that would be bizarre.

But I still buy both, see it in both and read it in both.

It's good to get a second opinion and there are enough differences in the style and content of the mag (and indeed in the road test of the particular new car) to be worth it.

Appreciate that MBM and MBY are owned by the same publishers, but I think the same thing applies completely.

Also, I tend to find MBM a bit braver and actually prepared to stick their neck out and gently criticise a boat (as close to damnation as you're ever likely to see), whereas MBY just seems to be a full on fawning exercise. Might as well read the brochure.
