Thanks for everyone who gave an opinion when I asked for advice on a boat for fishing, as you see I didn't go for the light, trailer-able boat on outboards route. My thinking is that it is a second boat and needs to be good as a platform for fishing year round in and around Plymouth and out to wrecks. I went with semi-d for sea keeping, cabin for weather protection, chunky displacement for stability and twin diesel shafts for ease of maintenance and manoeuvring.

It is a 2008 Rodman 870 with 270 hours on D3-160's and it passed its survey with no significant issues.

Nice choice and I do not think you be disappointment.

Interested to track your view on owning/maintaining two boats as its a decision I am on the verge of making. Keep a boat in UK and another in sunnier climes.

Will do.

We are still nervous about having two boats, up on balance decided to give it a try. It is another reason to go for something well regarded. If we decide it is a mistake having two boats then either we sell the Rodman, or we sell both Rodman and Princess and buy something else - which ever way around I thought I needed a boat that would sell easily. When we started looking a month ago there were 2 Rodman 1040's and one Rodman 870 for sale. All three had come on the market recently, and all three sold quickly. The boat we bought didn't get to market as we found out the owner was pondering selling it to upgrade and we helped him make his mind up together with Ben at RBS Marine.

jfm has already suggested that once we have a Rodmanfisher in Plymouth we should move the Princess to SoF. It is a thought :)

So very unlike jfm to make that suggestion... :D

Congrats on the new boat, looks like a sturdy beast. We'll be expecting lots of wsf-style pics of R displaying her trophy catches...

As we're now just a few boats along from you in Sutton, I look forward to a regular delivery of fresh fish................:)

I've always liked the Rodmans, look well built and very purposeful, should do you well.

+1

congrats on your purchase,
ideal boat for your purpose in your region.

threat them good the D3's and they will serve you well,
sporty diesel engines, with low consumption
had some issues with my twin D3-190 but I consider that bad luck,
keep the raw water filters clean !!! especially when you have been in dirty water, weed, etc...

Congrats. I am sure there is a local scaffolder who can build you a 7m tower on there. Please ensure a least a dozen enormously oversized VHF aerials and a fishfinder/sonar system that cost more than the boat.
I look forward to your cooking series on Ch 4: 100 ways to cook Pollack ;)

That's where we are! How will they manage that? Mind you, we're only there for the winter.

Um, maybe we have to act as your tender?

I haven't been down for 2 weeks, they offered A59 and A73, which is apparently the part of the hammerhead closest to the wall (where the parking spaces are). Maybe we should go in front of you. Don't worry I'm sure I will soon get the hang of a new boat and most dings polish out anyway :)

Aha, we're A58, so that explains it. Just make sure you leave the keys handy, I fancy a play! :)

That Rodman looks a winner!

Mind you, a friend of mine has a pic of him tuna fishing offshore in the Pacific on a very similar craft (pic taken from a companion boat) with an orca breaking the surface about a boat's length away.

As was said at the time, "you're gonna need a bigger boat":D

You have to kit it out now to be a proper fishing machine.

Proper stainless steel rod holders and lots of them.
A decent sounder
Built in tackle chest
Bait prep area

I could go on

Sounds like retail therapy is in order... Will follow your list and post photos to prove!

PS - what is a tackle chest?

Great looking boat and looks ideal for the purpose. Would agree that it makes sense to divide the cruising ground too to maximise opportunities - if not SoF, then at least somewhere new so you have a choice ;)

Have you still got your Dart mooring John? I imagine you'll miss that spot if not... :D
