New Boat Design - help needed!

Excellent stuff GOG. I like the diagonals twixt hulls too. Gripfill is getting hard to come by (solvent based) so Woodie might have to make do with NoNails or one of these similar water based glues, and in that case the side braces on the keels will help a lot. Just so long as they don't obscure the Coutts/ Netjets logos

Thanks again everyone. The keels seem to be stuck fast, but I am having problems getting them to stay in the right position - the hanger against the bottle keeps rolling along the tape. Your zig-zaggy struts could be the answer. Not sure I can bend many more hangers mind. I may have to get Mr Woodie to start bending!

I got a sneaky peak at last year's winning boat today...it's a cat made with 2x 4pint milk cartons and a large sail - beautifully spray painted in bright red, but NO KEELS - A mere lilo!

The designs on here are a bit better than my winning but disqualified design.....

a chocolate tin with a mast superglued to some bluetack a and a sandwich bag sail :D

OK then scrap the keels. Also scrap the round orange squash bottles and replace with 2x 1 litre orange juice/apple juice cartons from M+S foodshop, the 3 for £5 ones. The flat sides will allow the coat hangers to be fastened more strongly. The top of the carton has a slope that forms a nice bow.

Sorry!

Remember to extend their length to 15inches. As standard they're only 9.25inches

Or you could use those Vittel water bottles, with the square section

Well I did suggest blue-tacking them first... I like the square section idea. Trying to think of something light and rigid with a flat section that would make a better bridge between the hulls and be easier to glue. I can only think of sail battens or maybe a couple of rulers.

What's the sail going to be made of?

Hmmm...how about I untape the hangers and glue them on with the same adhesive as used on keel (it did stick well in the end) before taping them to the bottles?

I am thinking the bottles would float better than the cartons? Having said that maybe I'll just make both.

The sail is a coat hanger (as suggested by JFM) and the sail from a kite. Light weight plastic with kiddie appeal...

Gotta go to M&S - have orange juice to buy!

There has to be a way to hide a little motor and prop in there somewhere, you wouldn't want your offspring starting off on the wrong track. Anyway there's nothing wrong with using a motor whilst trying to fool onlookers that you're just under sail, raggies do it all the time :-)

Well...it was a tense Friday afternoon. My boat was ready and looking pretty funky with its silver sparkle paint and large Dora sail. At drop off I made sure to inspect the competition closely (despite the complimentary comments coming out of my mouth, I was feeling pretty smug as I knew we (err, my daughter) had made a superior vessel).

Thanks again everyone for your advice. You helped make a 3 year old (and her mother) very happy :o :o :o

Fantastic! The Doramobile flew out of the blocks; massive lead at the beginning. The one that came second had too much drag from the three bottles design and the fact its sail was turned 90deg from how it should have been. And the 2x 4pint milk bottle job (how unoriginal!) painted pink had far too small a sail. In the last second of the video it looks like someone had just lobbed a bleach bottle in as their entry
