If ever the RN gets these alleged new carriers what a pity to waste the opportunity of naming them properly. Not the currently planned really boring names, (Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales) and not Ark Royal again. Let's build three and call them Victorious, Happy, and Glorious.

During the first Gulf War, the Belgian Navy (no, it's not a joke!) deployed some of its minesweepers, named the "Zinnia", and the "Begonia"...
What about HMS Sweet pea, or HMS Busy Lizzie? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

HMS Happy. Inspired if I may say so.

Yup. Then we could have: HMS Grumpy, HMS Dopey, HMS Sleepy...... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

The RN's well ahead of you: there are some corking names in the Flower Class corvettes of WWII. HM Ships Bluebell, Buddleia, Buttercup, Candytuft /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif, Pink, primrose, Sweetbriar, et al.

I think the most bizarre RN name has to be HMS Black Joke, from the mid 19C. But this is trumped by the Canadians, who used to have HMCS Asbestos.

How about, ''H.M.S.Get Some Planes First'' they can build as many as they like but they don't have any aircraft! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

You probably are not aware that there is a special committee that is formed to decide on the names of RN ships. They do tend to traditional names for major warships, and I suspect that the Queen Elizabeth is as much a reference to the QE class of WWI (Hood was one of this class) as a reference to the Queen.

This committee does sometimes come up with some unexpected names, for example, the RN had a hydrofoil on lone from USA for a while, and during that time she was re-named HMS Speedy.

More to the point, it was Cochrane who gave inspiration to Capt. Jack. His biography is a fascinating read.

And on silly ship names, Freiderich der Grosse, WW1 battlewagon of the Teutonic persuasion - translates as Fat Freddie!

Very backward looking suggestions, we need something vibrant to reflect the reality of life in 21st century Britain. How about:

HMS... Ant n Dec
Ethnic Minority
Gender Realignment
Celebrity Sailor
Community
For the new Seeker class of frigate...
HMS.....Job Seeker
Asylum Seeker
