New 33ft Fairline

Why would you prefer the second engine?
The vast majority of engine failures are fuel related, yet the vast majority of twin engine boats in the 10m sector are single tank. So what you get in one you get in the other.

A T34 with a big 370/400hp diesel would be a great boat

Do you have a citation for the vast majority of engine failures being fuel related? I've seen it oft repeated, but rarely with any actual figures/references

One link I found contradicts this, with fuel related issues being 16%

The price differential between some new models and 10 yr old equivalents certainly makes re-engine and refit projects more and more viable (man maths of course). The Targa 40 is a great example, a good one can be bought for circa £120k with good engines. Add £30k for an interior refit (covers), new hoods, new nav, praps a larger swim platform a la JtB and you have a great boat for £150k that would cost £350k to £500k.

Plus doing a refit is great fun. I'd definitely like to do another one.

Spoke to one of the Fairline guys at SIBS yesterday - he confirmed that it will be a day boat / cuddy arrangement with no current plans for a smaller 'targa' to be added to the range.

He mentioned that they have been working a name for their new 33ft model this week amongst the team at the show and "F10" (I assume for 'Fairline 10m' was apparently the front runner)......anyone with a better idea, you might get to name the new model!?!

Well, in remembrance of Sam Newington an RAF inspired name would be good (developing on from the Phantom, Squadron, Mirage, Fury names) to further develop the tradition and heritage of the company.

There's loads to choose from - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_aircraft_of_the_Royal_Air_Force...

Fairline Barracuda
Fairline Catalina
Fairline Comet
Fairline Dolphin
Fairline Firefly
Fairline Fox
Fairline Harrier..... and that's just up to 'H'

Any suggestions?

J, would you consider refitting a tired / neglected boat or would you prefer to have a good one as the starting point?

Incidentally, I slightly regret not having the engines out of ours for a re-paint but I dare say something (rams?) might force removal in the years to come.

If the hull and engines are sound, then everything else doesn't matter imho. The more tired it is, the easier it is to make it better.

What would be your ideal next boat for a refit Jimmy?

At this stage, I'd like to do another sportcruiser, but a bigger one 55-60 ft. Prev model V58, T62, something like that.

My money’s on a 45’ trawler - somewhere near St. Pete’ ready for the loop....would make an epic thread!

... and that would be the boat after next. I'm still very keen on this idea, but I've got one more big (work) project to get through in the UK before I can get away to the US for an extended cruise. Four years to go...
