Have just purchased a new Suzuki 2.5hp four stroke outboard.

Is it worth paying dealer service prices to keep the three year warranty?

Service manual says it requires a first service after 1month or 20hours which ever occurs first.

Just a check over and oil change. Quote from nearest Suzuki dealer is £93

In two minds what to do!

Happy to service it myself, but would assume I would lose warranty!

What's the general consensus?

Thanks Lee

Not all warranties are void if servicing is not carried out by a main dealer. Some allow non dealer servicing providing specified parts are used and the schedule is followed. Check with Honda.

Or better still in the OP's case with Suzuki :)

I bought my DF2.5 brand new in 2014 but would never let a dealer anywhere near it. Three years servicing at that price would be more than half the cost of buying a new one.

Provided you change the oil (keep a record of your oil purchase and oil change date) it should be fine. If anything non-fixable were to go wrong with it, which is highly unlikely as these are simple engines, then ask the supplier to put it right. If your claim is fair but they refuse to sort it out just take them through small claims. They will fail to turn up for the hearing and you will be awarded the cost of repair.

However, I very much doubt that you will have any problems with it.

The price for the first service by the dealer varies from £60 to £160 for a 3.5 hp four stroke Mercury/Tohatsu outboard; I have paid both rates. Next time, I will service the engine myself, record it and I will keep all receipts just in case I need to claim against the warranty.

Can't speak specifically for outboards, but for new cars no warranties are void if servicing is not carried out by a main dealer. That's been the law for over a decade (EU Block Exemption regulations, intended to promote competition). Parts and service schedule must, of course, be as you wrote.

Learn to take it to bits yourself.
I have had my Yamaha 2.5 for 14 years now and never paid for a service. I have saved £1000 on what was a £400 motor.
I can remove strip and replace the carb in 15 minutes. I have only ever changed the oil twice. Just fitted a new fuel filter and filler cap, plus a prop last year.
But then I only use it 2 or 3 times a year and don't rely on it to get to mooring. The economics say don't service it for five years and spend the money on a new one?

Keep the oil changed.Check water flow and keep it flushed regular Make sure the oil in the gearbox is changed and most importantly make sure your carb is perfect. Don't leave fuel sitting in the carb for long periods. If you stick to this they are very very good engines. In my opinion outboard dealer warranties a lot of the time are not worth the paper they are printed on
