New car - old trailer board.

Whats the easiest way to connect them.

1. Buy new 13 pin male socket and connect to trailer board (any pointers to wiring diagram as ones I have seen never sure whether looking at face or rear of plug!

2. Buy converter (seems bulky)

3. Buy converter cable but most talk about 2 7 pin sockets one grey & one black!

Just need to trail my dinghy to the club

New plug probably the least expensive.
Adapter the easiest and you still have the old plug on the lead that will plug into a 7 pin socket if necessary.

Decent unambiguous wiring diagram at http://www.thebritishcaravannersclub.co.uk/Help Advice/information/wiring.php

Remember the new type socket is tested as part of the MoT!

I use a 7 / 13 pin adapter cost me the equivalent of 19 £. (your option 2)
Not so bulky, I can still tow trailers with 13 pins

The bulge on one side is there to keep the lid on the car contact open

The 13 to 7 pin adapter a good bet as suggested by knuterikt.

Got this arrangement on my golf.

The German 13 pin sockets always seem good quality and I think you get less corrosion on car socket.

Don't forget that a 13pin socket will need to pass MoT, when the time comes, but the old ones don't.

Thanks for everyones advice. Decided to order a new 13 pin plug and wire it to old trailer lead.

Amazed at cost - I like to support local shops. Local shop £16 , e bay £4.60!

The socket is actually integrated into the Audi factory fitted towhook that swings down after releasing it with a bowden cable from inside car. V neat. I could have got an aftermarket one for half the price but the factory fit one alters the stability program and I hope the reversing sensors!
