Am looking at an old boat which has a Volvo 10hp diesel engine, which apparently does not run and will not run despite attempts.
I believe that parts for these engines are unobtainable.
Can anyone suggest a new replacement ? I believe that Chinese Engines are available.

If you're re-engining an old boat, think about whether a few more horses would improve matters. There are times you'll be grateful for the ability to maintain hull speed in a bit of a chop.

My Snapdragon had 8 hp, but most people put 12 - 15 hp in when they have to replace them. My 28 hp's definitely over the top, though ...

You're considering Chinese engines due to VP parts availability issues? What chance do you think there'll be of getting parts support for a Chinese engine in a few years' time? Buy another VP, or a Beta, Yanmar, etc.

What boat is it for? FWIW my Bowman 26 (2.5 tons) has a Beta 10, it came with the boat and is I think a good compromise between power and weight, yes it would be nice to have a bit more but I wouldn't change it. Fuel consumption is a revelation - 2/3 to 3/4 of a litre an hour and pushes the boat along happily at 5 knots in most conditions. Smoother than Yanmar 1GM as it's a twin...

Interesting fuel consumption. I have a friend with about 11m planing boat with twin diesels on legs. It might go that slowly at tickover and use a similar amount of fuel. Why isn't a lighter displacement design more economical?

Note that with any replacement engine you may well need to change the propellor (pitch, maybe direction of rotation); prop shaft likely to need cutting down length or replacing to get greater length; exhaust hose, fuel inlet hose, etc. may be different sizes and/or on different side of engine.

You may well need to either rebuild/modify the engine bearers, or have purpose made brackets for mounting the engine to your existing bearers.

The cost of the above does add to the cost of the replacement engine.

Carefully measure the engine space you have available, as this may restrict your choice of engines.

If you're looking at Betas, the 10hp that V1701 mentioned above is just a restricted (to 3,000rpm) version of the otherwise identical 14hp (which revs to 3,600). (Probably the same for Nanni (which use the same base engines at this size.) The 14hp will be a few hundred pounds more, but worth it unless the 10hp would allow you to use the existing prop.

Marine Enterprises (that Tillergirl linked to above) sell ex-lifeboat Bukh engines, which will generally be some years old but very few hours run. The Bukh DV series are sound (though heavy) engines that are still in production (though the 10hp no longer) after 40 years. Most parts, though not cheap, are readily available (including those for the 10hp, as its a single cylinder version of the still in production 2 cylinder 20hp & 24hp).
