Never regret the things you\'ve done only the things you haven\'t don

Hi, I'm new to ybw.com I found the site by accident, so glad I did.
reading the postings on this site and returning from a camping trip in the lake district (what's camping got to do with world cruising, you might ask) well it's made me think about my life.
The well known saying springs to mind "never regret the things you've done only the things you haven't done"
About a week into my camping trip, very early one morning I was sitting at the side of the lake with the wind blowing quite strongly off the water on to my face.
It reminded me of my past I shut my eyes and it was as if I was transported to a different world that seemed so far away, I was on the helm helm of a beneteau 45 surfing down the long steep swell as we crossed biscay, my first delivery job, on route to St Topas.
So what is the point of all this, well I regret not fullfilling my dream, sailing was my life, I was an accomplished professional boat builder in steel and aluminium spending many years building my own ultimate liveaboard boat, a steel spray 45 but unfortunatly I decided to change the goal posts and gave it all up.
More pressing things were upon me, I went through a gender change and having done this gave up boat building and sailing as I thought it was not a "girly" thing to do. so back to me sitting at the lake, that morning i realised that you can do and achieve anything you want to if you really have the mind to do it. I will never regret going through my gender change but I will always regret not following my dream.

I now intend to rectify that error I made in my life, it means I have to start again but I will catch you all up soon, in the mean time a word of advice to all of you out there who are thinking of selling up to sail DO IT NOW or you will only regret not doing it ! I wish you all well with fair winds and calm seas not to calm as a bit of a blow can be really good fun.(isn't that what its all about) I just needed to share that with you all thank you.....................now where is the number for that steel stockholder I used to deal with, I'v got some drawings for a nice 32 footer somewhere.
Rachel.

Hi Rachel,
I wish you all the best with your dream and applaude you for sharing your very personal story.
My partner and I are at the moment refurbishing a Colvic 50 and plan to sail into the sunset in 2007 which will be the end of a five year plan.
Regards Klass

Never regret what has made you who you are.

I agree totally with the philosophy of chasing your dream. My wife and I took early retirement at a point when we were both at the peak of our profession and earning power in order to sail off into the sunset and we have never regretted it. However, I don't believe you should regret anything in life unless you have hurt someone else by your actions.

I believe that the trials which beset me today are but the fiery tests by which my character is strengthened, ennobled, and made worthy to enjoy the higher things of life, which I believe are in store for me. I believe that my soul is too grand to be crushed by defeat; I will rise above it. I will not yield to discouragements; I will trample them under foot and make them serve as stepping stones to success; I will conquer my obstacles and turn them into opportunities.

If you had not taken time out when you did you would not be the person you are today and, the chances are, you would not have the strength and wisdom evident in your post. Never regret what has made you who you are.

It's never too late to follow your dream, Rachel. Go for it!

Thank you all for your kind words and encouragement.
It's warming to know that others are there who share the same goal.
I am now back on a perminant high as I used to be when ever I was doing anything connectcted to boats and sailing,
I've orderd two tons of steel plates and sections yesterday and I've managed to get most of the frames lofted.
I'm chomping at the bitt to make a start on the fabrication.

"Watch this space" as they say.

Thanks again and I hope that in the not too distant future our paths will cross so that I can buy you a beer or two.
