Greetings.. Bill Tilman said , Never go to sea without an onion, but now a tennis ball is part of my inventory.

My boat has a stern gland greaser which needs screwing down every day, but the grease-pushing leather inverted cup split.
Quite long way from home in N Denmark. I had a brainwave and, after a couple of failed attempts, managed to cut a bit of rubber tennis ball to the right size! Quite pleased with that!
( I was going to put up some photos, but not allowed being new here, so they will have to wait..)

Similarly and pneumatic tyre inner tube. Very robust bits of rubber that can be used for lots if bodges.
 
I thought you were going to refer to a valve in the hull. Might do a very good job of sealing a valve from underneath if stationery!
 
Tennis balls are always useful - great for games of catch and they make great tow bar protectors if you lose them. They are also useful for tennis...
