Is it orbital or rotary like an angle grinder?

If the latter, you will get swirls all over your topsides which will only be visible in certain lighting conditions.

Four years back, several owners were reduced to tears at Port Hamble when an outside contractor did a series of hull polishings with a rotary. In the sodium lighting of the carpark we were transported to a psychadelic extravaganza.

A "Random Orbital Polisher" is the way to go. This is what car showrooms use.
