Netherlands: Amsterdam-Flushing via Inland Waterways?

Assume that you are familiar with the etiquette of Dutch locking in or out - simply every man for himself, until you do that and get a bo$$ocking from the lock master and anyone you got in front of.

Vlissingen is nice if you can get in the town harbour - involves the tides, how much of the wave breaker you can see [pm for details - we have the knowledge - involves a pdf of the instructions] Oh! and you have to phone the cafe to come and let you in.
The marinas at Vlissingen inside the lock gates are in completely the wrong place - needs a long walk to town.
If you leave the canal on a rising tide then better to go SE down to Terneuzen - nice little Dutch town with all the character of Barking. Good marina, bakers nearby, shops - supermarket a lot further away!

Better plan is to stop the night at Middelburg and then get out of the canal at Vlissingen and to be able to get to Terneuzen

You might need a blazer or some highly tuned racing machine to feel at home in Breskens - nice for a lunch stop on the way to Terneuzen
Otherwise we love the place [Terneuzen] , been our home base for last 3 seasons

I live in Dordrecht, part of the inland route from Vlissingen to Amsterdam (actually even further). I've done it myself a few times. Most advice above is good. If you want more details PM me.

Cheers,

Arno

Many thanks to everybody who posted on this thread, you all have given me a loads of ideas and practical info for me to start work on some sort of plan. I very excited about realising this Summer cruise now!

Allthough the standing mast route is interesting in itself, it does cause you to lose several days. It would be more efficient to do two holidays: year 1 in the south (Zeeland), the other year the IJsselmeer and Markermeer.

Leave the boat in Goes and take a 1 hour train to Amsterdam, for visiting your friends.

Breskens is not that expensive, but there isn't much to see. You'll pay about 17€ for a 34ft. Terneuzen is cheaper, with a nice town just over the dike. Then go through Hansweert, to Goes or Zierikzee. Then Willemstad, then Middelharnis. And about 20 other nice fishing villages. Antwerp and Ghent are also accessible, even Brussels (2 days: Terneuzen-Antwerp, Antwerp-Brussel).
