Neptune 4500 or Dometic Starlight 2

Be warned - we ordered a Neptune 5500 (the three burner model), to replace the same model cooker on Pagan which is getting rather tired, having seen what appeared to be a much improved version at Southampton.

When it arrived two months later it was nothing like the model displayed at the show. Significantly lower quality pressings and assembly, no fiddle rail and pan "clamps" that were not fit for purpose (and I do mean not fit for purpose. Totally useless)

It went back, obviously

After a further wait, the response from the manufacturers was, effectively, take it or leave it

We left it and received a full refund from the retailer

No blame to the retailer or distributor who acted in good faith and did their collective best to get the cooker advertised and ordered

Leisure Products are STILL showing the now discontinued quality model on their web site but if you order one you won't get what you expect

Has anyone a preference over one or the other of these gas cookers. Bainbridge Neptune 4500 (originally Plastimo) or the Dometic Starlight 2 both with 2 hobs, grill & oven. Will replace my old Atlantic with one of these but no experience as a user of either. Both stainless steel although not sure about the side panels & similar price & size.
I would not recommend the Dometic Starlight. We bought on in 2012. Within two seasons one of the flame fasts on the hob had failed and was replaced by a gas-fitter. This season (2020) both the hob flame fasts have failed

I was advised by a gas engineer that the LP Neptune is screwed together, whereas the Dometic is pop rivetted, so not able to be dismantled... Very happy with my Neptune 4500
Pop rivets can be easily drilled out and remade if that were an issue.
We have been using the Dometic Moonlight (3-burner) for three years now and are very happy with it. It looks great and is easy to clean. The oven door does have a lock on it. We installed it without the gimbals, mainly due to the lack of space, but the potholders work well and it has not been a problem for us, even at sea.
We live aboard for 3-4 months each year and cooking with a degree of culinary aspiration is important to us.

I have tried both and found the build quality sadly lacking. The Plastimo had a useless grill, the Neptune rusted badly,

I bit the bullet and shelled out for a Force 10 as I spend a lot of time on board and seldom eat out. It is in a different league on build quality. Need minor changes to the finals. Very pleased so far.

The problem right there is that nobody in the UK has any stock nor has had for some time

And it's far from clear whether they're even being made any more

Otherwise I'd have beaten my credit card into submission and bought one by now!

I fitted the Neptune a couple of months ago, as a replacement for a clapped out Atlantic. Slotted into the space exactly and was the right price too.
Very pleased with it so far.
