Hi

1st post

I am lookng to add AIS to an existing chart plotter which is capable of displaying this - the input is shown as nema 183 at 38400 baud rate
I am thinking of the NASA engine but the output is shown as nema 2000 at 38400 baud rate

will they talk to each other ??

Nasa have it wrong on their website. Their AIS engine is NMEA 0183. The confusion occurs because 0183 is usually 4800 baud but AIS requires the higher data rate of 38400 baud.
You will have no problem using the nasa engine on your plotter.

Welcome to the mad house.

I have just connected a NASA AIS Engine to my Navman 5507 plotter.
The plotter only takes NMEA 0183.
It is working well.
You will need to set the right options in the set up menus for the plotter to accept the AIS data.

Good luck

The Nasa Engine is not using NMEA2000, which is a CAN-bus related kind of data network. The Nasa Engine uses NMEA 0183HS, which is the high speed version (last amendmend to NMEA 0183) and in practical only differs in the speed of data.
