Portland Coast Guard requested launch to an EPRIB signal within 3’ radius of a position 14’ S Portland Bill. Lifeboat proceeded and warships Northumberland and St.Aldhelms responded. Warships where on scene before Lifeboat and started to conduct a search. EPRIB was found to be registered to McMurdo’s of Portsmouth and shore base investigations of their premises found no signal. When Lifeboat arrived they conducted a 121.5 DF and searchlight search around the boundaries of the search area with nothing found. With another 6 satellite passes and no further signals detected search was terminated. Once McMurdo’s office staff arrived at their premises the investigated there data base and found that the beacon was onboard HMS St.Aldhelms and must have been accidentally activated!
