Nelson - do we feel the love?

I had a Halmatic 34 hull by Halmatic but finished by Seaward Marine The Halmatic 34 was also finished as the Weymouth 34 and the Humber 34.

Th Halmatic 34 was designed by John Askham as Was the Halmatic 32. John Askham had worked for TT Boat Designs previously but then I assume went on his own, so if it were a painting I assume you would call it " In the school of Nelsons".

And very optimistic, mine has 2 x 145hp with bloody great big trim tabs to stop her digging her ass in, and to get 15 kts she needs a F8 up her stern and a slope down hill of about 15 degrees to get that:rolleyes:

Lies, damn lies, and boat statistics.

Ok, so the Nelson s /d hull does push a wall of water in front of the bow after all! ;)

3) The whole boat felt very "dated / Morris Oxford" to me.....a throw back to the 60s.......but again that may appeal to some.

A lot is personal taste / preferance, but I was interested that you had some similar thoughts and coincidently also came to prefer the Aquastar........Nelsons do have some following, but to a new user I would suggest trying to spend some time on one, particularly manouvering and mooring it before they commited to a deal.

Bandits thoughts appear to confirm some of my comments........try a Nelson then try an Aquastar ....make your own comparison.

Sensible post. good advice. I have been very involved with Nelsons in the past but having migrated back to motor from sail due to becoming an old fart I run an Aquastar..... More stable, better load taking capability and spacious interior for living on. Of course any semidisplacement boat will guzzle diesel more than a planing gin palace but I would rather be in one in anything of a sea and the SD will be economical and comfortable at 8 knots where the planing boat wont........... Having said all that the boat in question (40 ft???) looks awesome for the price and if the mechanics are in good nick has to be a bargain...... Dont think you would find a good AQS for that money.

What sort of speed can you do on 2gal/hr approx?

What sort of speed can you do on 2gal/hr approx?

Probably about 6-8 Knots depending on sea conditions. (Aquastar 33 with twin TAMD41A diesels). 12 knots about 30 litres per hour. 20 knots 80 litres per hour.
Usual cruising speed therefore 8 knots. The difference between this and a planing boat is therefore considerable at speed in calm conditions but if it cuts up rough I can get to port at 15/16 knots without upchucking :-)
